Abstract

In the adult mammalian brain, new neurons are continuously generated at the subventricular zone of the lateral ventricles and the subgranular zone of the hippocampal dentate gyrus. In the cerebral cortex, though the generation of new neurons is rarely observed in physiological situations, induction of neurogenesis has been shown under pathological conditions, such as after cerebral ischemia. In this chapter, we introduce the injury-induced neural stem/progenitor cells in the cerebral cortex and its potential for functional recovery. We also refer to the therapeutic potential of exogenous neuronal stem cell transplantation and discuss the future of cell-based therapy for stroke patients.
