Researchers have found that people who receive intravenous immunoglobulin seem to have an increased risk of a stroke.
Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a common treatment for a wide range
of neurologic and blood disorders. There have been sporadic reports of
stroke linked to IVIG since the mid 1980s. Wake Forest University School
of Medicine now reports on the largest collection of cases of IVIG
linked stroke.
In a group of 16 patients, 14 experienced a stroke either during or
within 24 hours of IVIG treatment. In the others, the stroke occurred
within four days of treatment. Fifteen out of sixteen had one or more
risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. The
overall risk of IVIG linked stroke is very small – just 0.6 per cent of
patients receiving the treatment in a four year period, say the
researchers. But this study suggests it is important to identify those
most at risk of stroke before giving them IVIG treatment.
