Stem cell company Athersys eyes potential new opportunities for its stroke therapy in Japan

I'm not sure I like the idea. Its safe to use but hasn't been proven to do anything. Why not just take a sugar pill? Why would we allow a company to profit off  of selling nothing?

In its annual financial results call on Thursday, Athersys’ chief operating officer, BJ Lehmann, explained that legislation passed last fall in Japan could allow for conditional approval of new regenerative medicines that demonstrate strong safety profiles in clinical trials, even if efficacy hasn’t been fully demonstrated.

  1. selling nothing? that is a rather simplistic and myopic view...they are selling stem cell treatment, with a host of data suggesting efficacy...just not a large phase 3 trial...you fail to even review all of the requirements necessary to meet this prelim approval to go this route...
