Mo Costandi has a great discussion on this. I personally think that a lot of my problems are because of the amount of white matter destroyed in my brain. I don't think there is any scan that shows problems in white matter. My fMRI only shows damage in my gray matter, that is bad enough.
If anyone has protocols on recovering white matter connections I haven't seen it. With a decent 3d rendering of the arterial map of the brain and the knowledge of where the damage point started you could make a good guess of what damage there is in the white matter. But we have no one that has any clue of what strategic plan we should be addressing in stroke damage.
White matter might matter much more than we thought
