Saugatuck Sand Dunes state park, MI

Walked 5-6 miles of these trails this past weekend. Beautiful yellow and gold colors, warm, 50s and 60s.  The forested sand dunes were good walking, fairly stable and well packed. The dunes however were quite the challenge.  A friend told me that was because the sand grains were round rather than angular so climbing up has almost no stability. Walking the beach was pretty good because the packed sand was at a slant, forcing you to use the muscles that prevent the affected foot from rolling under. When climbing the dunes my left foot was at a 45 degree angle because I still have no pushoff with my toes.

  1. Beautiful. How long did the 5-6 miles take you to walk? After my knee surgery (my limiting factor now), I want to routinely walk the 5-mile circle around the block, but I don't want it to take too much of my day. I know we're all different - blah, blah - but I'd like a reasonable estimate.

    1. 3 miles took me about 2 hours, the sand dunes slowed that down considerably. If I was walking in that sand for an extended basis I'd need an hour for a mile.
