Finally came up with a solution since I don't have a strong enough pinch grip to hold the left side of the zipper to get it started. Attached a diaper pin to the edge of the coat, then added a small carabiner, which I can stick a finger in to hold it firmly until the zipper catches. Technically not a carabines since it doesn;t have a gate that swings open.
