• Indigenous communities have utilized
psychedelics in traditional medicinal
rituals for thousands of years
• Current interest in psychedelics stems
from the synthesis and discovery of
lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) by
Albert Hoffman in 1938 and
subsequent ingestion in 1943
• In the following years between 1950
and 1965, psychiatrists tested
psychedelics on a variety of
psychiatric disorders including alcohol
use disorder, schizophrenia, and

Controlled Substances Act of 1970
• In 1970, the US government passed the Controlled Substances Act,
which established our current legal system where drugs are placed in
different schedules based on their perceived medical value and
addiction potential
• Despite the ongoing medical research on psychedelics at the time,
political movements resulted in psychedelics being placed in the
most restricted class of drugs: Schedule I
• The placement of psychedelics into Schedule I resulted in a halt of all
ongoing research into the medical value of psychedelics until the
recent so-called psychedelic renaissance
