Wasn't the patient told about non-surgical options? Or is revenue generation of more importance than the patient?

Connecticut neurosurgeon helps stroke patients with rehabilitation device

A UConn Health neurosurgeon performs procedures that implant a device called a Vivistim, which is a form of Vagus Nerve Stimulation therapy.

FARMINGTON, Conn. — A Connecticut neurosurgeon has been a pioneer over the past year in performing procedures that implant a device to help people who have suffered from strokes.

Dr. Christopher Conner, a neurosurgeon at UConn Health's Brain and Spine Institute, utilizes an FDA-approved device known as the Vivistim System, which is a form of Vagus Nerve Stimulation therapy.

"It is something that delivers electrical currents to a body part or target in the body. It’s like a little battery and a little wire wraps around a nerve and it delivers electricity when you need it," Conner said.

Lisa Donegan, a mother of three and a wife from Ashford, is just the 10th patient in Connecticut to receive a Vivistim. She suffered a stroke two years ago and lost control of her left side.

It didn’t take long until Donegan was under the care of Conner, who has performed all of the procedures.

Donegan has made marked improvements but still walks with the help of a cane. She now works multiple times a week with the rehabilitation team at Hartford HealthCare in West Hartford.

“I don’t want to be at 70 or 60%, I want to be at 110% and I want to be hiking and dancing and maybe running," Donegan said.

Conner believes that the Vivistim could be a breakthrough in his field of study.

“We are seeing the future right now,” he said.

From UConn Health to Hartford Hospital, Donegan has praise for the medical team that literally got her back on her feet.

“I really feel like I have a support team and a care team that will go everywhere with me. I’m filled with gratitude for where I am now," she said.
