Last Friday I bushwacked thru lots of swamp and brambles looking for higher ground where morels might be. Didn't find any. I was excited on Friday as I finished up my walk, heard a toddler say to his Dad; 'I found one daddy, I found one'. The family was bent over looking at the ground near a fallen tree. I immediately thought 'morels'. So Saturday morning was out there at 7am for the next 1.5 hours and found nothing. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday went out again, again nothing, but I did find some false morels, probably Verpa Bohemica. Today talked to a family who found one real morel so far, which is good news since I thought it was too early, supposedly when the soil temp 4 inches down reaches 59 F. the morels can sprout. Will redouble my efforts the next couple of days, it allows me to easily get in 8000 steps a day.
False morel in the wild, Verpa Bohemica |
They are not hollow inside and the bottom of the cap does not connect to the stem |
True morels, hollow, cap attached. |
