According to the American Heart Association, strokes are experienced by approximately 795,000 Americans each year and remain the leading cause of disability in North America. It is important for emergency room physicians to identify and treat patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) quickly in order to best retain patients’ quality of life. Treatment of AIS is time sensitive, and with the recent updates to the use of endovascular procedures and thrombolytic therapy, physicians need to be prepared for a shift in the treatment paradigm without compromising patient safety.
