Deans' stroke musings: Plans for Stroke Rehab Unit at Vale Hospital

Changing stroke rehab and research worldwide now.Time is Brain! trillions and trillions of neurons that DIE each day because there are NO effective hyperacute therapies besides tPA(only 12% effective). I have 523 posts on hyperacute therapy, enough for researchers to spend decades proving them out. These are my personal ideas and blog on stroke rehabilitation and stroke research. Do not attempt any of these without checking with your medical provider. Unless you join me in agitating, when you need these therapies they won't be there.

My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

Plans for Stroke Rehab Unit at Vale Hospital - UK

YOU have to provide feedback that the measurement of success of the unit is 100% recovery. Don't let them use the tyranny of low expectations to accept any lower goal. Yes that is a BHAG(Big Hairy Audacious Goal) but leaders tackle such goals. Do you have leaders in your stroke hospital or CHICKENSHITS?

PROPOSALS have been announced for a £400,000 stroke rehabilitation unit to be built at Vale Community Hospital.

The Dursley hospital is the preferred location for the new unit, designed to meet national recommendations for stroke rehabilitation.(I bet those recommendations follow the tyranny of low expectations)

NHS Gloucestershire’s Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are seeking to address a gap in provision of stroke care in Gloucestershire.

Clinical lead at the CCG, Debbie Gray said: “Our ambition is to develop a centre of excellence approach to community specialist stroke rehabilitation.

“We believe this proposal would improve levels of recovery and independence.”(You can see from this comment they are already accepting defeat. YOU have to change that mindset)

Those who suffer a stroke in Gloucestershire are treated at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH), with patients who are unable to have rehabilitation in their home remaining there for treatment.

The plans are designed to reduce pressure on beds at GRH and allow staff to focus their time on caring for seriously unwell patients.

Doctors and managers carried out an appraisal with their preferred option the creation of a Stroke Rehabilitation Unit. Vale Hospital was chosen as the preferred location following a further review.

Head of adult physiotherapy at Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust, Sarah Morton said: “If patients receive intensive rehabilitation support in the weeks after a stroke it is clear that we can make a real difference to people’s lives across Gloucestershire.

“By locating the service on a single site, specialist staff and skills would be brought together in one place and it would reduce the amount of hours lost travelling to multiple locations.”

The new unit will consist of 14 beds. Extra physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, dietetics, psychology and social work staff will work in the unit.

The CCG have said they will invest £488,000 into the project to fund these new jobs.

If the proposal is approved the unit will open in Autumn 2018.

Feedback is currently being collected and people have until July 31 to share their views.
