Late Friday evening, Governor Rick Perry signed three important
pieces of legislation that will impact the heart health of all Texans.
Senate Bill 1, which is the General Appropriations Act for the upcoming biennium beginning Sept. 1, 2013, included $5 million appropriated to the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke, of which $500,000 is to be used for stroke and ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) data collection and $4.5 million to be used for the Lone Star Stroke Consortium, which will be utilized for stroke systems of care coordination.
Perry also signed two critical pieces of legislation, HB 897 (CPR in Schools) and HB 740 (newborn screening for congenital heart defects). These three campaigns will have a significant impact on heart disease and stroke in Texas.
