VIJAYAWADA: In a tragic incident, an elderly couple committed suicide in a private hospital by consuming pesticide on Wednesday. The reason for their extreme step is said to be health issues as they left a suicide note saying no one is responsible for their death.
Thummalapalli Ramakrishna (60) and his wife Satya Naga Rani (58) were taken to Vijayawada Institute of Neuro Sciences (VINS) at Nakkal Road on January 24. Both the wife and the husband were suffering with health ailments and were paralysed after brain stroke.
Ramakrishna used to run a hardware shop and the couple has two sons and a daughter. Three of them were married and happily settled. About two years ago, the couple who were already mired in health complications decided to live in a peaceful location and joined Ganapati Sacchidananda Asram in Machilipatnam.
About six months ago, Rani suffered brain stroke. She was treated in Vijayawada and since then their elder son Rajesh Kumar was looking after them at his residence. On January 24 Rani again suffered brain stroke and was paralysed. She was rushed to VINS hospital. She was in ICU for three days and was later shifted to general ward. The doctors said that she would be discharged from the hospital on Wednesday.

There is no cure for paralysis stroke. This is unfortunate. Living as disabled person in old age is hell. There are a few centres, like one in Ankola, who give herbal medicines to cure stroke. On Tuesday night after having dinner, Rajesh left for home while Ramakrishna accompanied his wife. They consumed pesticide after everyone left. The hospital staff declared them dead on Wednesday morning and informed family members as well as the police.
Suryaraopet sub-inspector K Giribabu visited the spot and recovered a suicide note. The couple wrote that they were tired of fighting with paralysis which is the only reason for their extreme step and no one is responsible for their action. The police registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC and handed over the bodies to the kin after post-mortem.
