Edward Pearce, who is just 13, gets up at 6am every day to look after his dad before walking two and-a-half miles to school.
Since that brave decision, Edward has also taken on housework, cooking, and looking after his father's needs.
The schoolboy's "selflessness" and "outstanding" commitment to looking after his "proud" dad was recognised at an awards ceremony held by the Stroke Association at Dorchester Hotel in London on Wednesday (November 1).
Edward was presented the Life After Stroke Carers Award by rugby legend Michael Lynagh and comedian Stephen K Amos
Mr Pearce said: "It is hard to express just how incredibly proud I am of Edward, he is my rock. Without him, I would be on my own, and struggling to cope with the effects of my stroke.
"He has been forced to grow up extremely quickly and yet he never complains. It breaks my heart that he isn’t having a 'normal' childhood.
"Every day, I wish Edward didn’t have to shoulder so much responsibility, but he’s growing into a mature, kind and caring young man and I’m so happy he’s getting this award."
Despite balancing his demanding caring schedule and school work, Edward has received an impressive eight platinum awards for attitude to learning in a recent school report.
However, Edward's main passion is football and he was delighted when Chelsea Football Club hero, David Luiz presented him with another Life After Stroke Carers Award in October.
'Stroke hero'
Juliet Bouverie, chief executive of the Stroke Association, said: "Edward’s decision to care for his father in stressful circumstances is outstanding, and demonstrates real maturity at such a young age.
"Caring can be extremely hard, even if you are helping someone you love. Edward’s selflessness and his commitment are inspiring. In adversity, he has stepped up and shown himself to be both generous and capable - he really is a stroke hero."
The Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Awards celebrates the achievements of unsung heroes who are helping to conquer stroke.
