Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the US, a new report revealed.
One in every three deaths in the US occurs because of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
And across the globe, heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death, according to the American Heart Association.
The
AHA’s 2016 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update showed
cardiovascular diseases claimed 801,000 lives in the US in 2013 – the
last available data.
Of that group, heart disease killed more than 370,000 people.
Stroke took the lives of nearly 129,000 people.
A report from the American Heart
Association revealed that cardiovascular disease is the top killer in
the US. Heart disease and stroke were also found to be the top two
killers worldwide
Dr
Mark Creager, president of the AHA, said: ‘Statistics about
cardiovascular disease and stroke, and particularly the metrics about
death and the factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease are
incredibly important.’
The report has been produced annually since 1958.
It
uses the most-recent data available from the AHA, the National
Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and
other government sources.
The statistics help the AHA track the effectiveness of its efforts.
But
despite the progress in reducing the number of deaths from heart
disease and stroke, Dr Creager said the data is still too high.
