It is your doctor's responsibility to get you running again. But since that won't occur, you might want to read the Tommye-K. Mayer book 'Teaching Me to Run'.

Abstract
Running can be an intense and strenuous form of exercise on the body but it greatly benefits overall health. Current research shows that running can not only improve physical health, but it can also improve mental health. The body’s biological response to consistent long-term running causes an increase in neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus. This increase results in higher cognitive function and can be used in combination with traditional therapies to treat mental health disorders including depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Running induced hippocampal neurogenesis may be the key potential mechanism targeted for developing pharmaceutical treatment for neurodegenerative diseases to slow its progression and manage symptoms.
