My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

Mediterranean-style diet improves systolic blood pressure and arterial stiffness in older adults: Results of a 1-year European multi-center trial

In this year-long, European, multicenter, randomized controlled trial, researchers evaluated the impact of a Mediterranean-style diet (specifically designed according to dietary recommendations for individuals aged ≥ 65 years) on blood pressure (BP) and arterial stiffness among older adults. They measured blood pressure in 1,294 healthy participants (aged 65-79 years) who were recruited from 5 European centers, and assessed arterial stiffness in a subset of 225 participants. The intervention involved the provision of individually tailored standardized dietary advice and commercially available foods to increase adherence to a Mediterranean diet. Habitual diet was continued in the control group, and current national dietary guidance was provided. A total of 1,142 participants completed the trial (88.2%). Following the year-long intervention, the investigators observed a significant reduction in systolic BP, which was evident in men but not women. Overall, this dietary intervention resulted in clinically relevant attenuations in blood pressure and arterial stiffness.

Taking calcium and vitamin D can help prevent broken bones in older women. However, this benefit may be cancelled out by an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
With the highest reported risk of hip fractures in the word, Norway has good reason to consider the benefits and risks of calcium supplements. The challenge is that too little calcium and vitamin D in your diet leads to an increased risk of osteoporosis and broken bones, which taking supplements has been shown to help prevent.
However, some studies have also shown that taking supplemental calcium may also increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.
"We conclude that the moderate effect of supplemental calcium and vitamin D on the risk of fractures is not large enough to outweigh the potential increased risk of cardiovascular disease, specifically in women who are at a low risk of bone fracture," said Gunhild Hagen, a PhD candidate at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology's (NTNU) Department of Public Heath and General Practice who was first author of an article recently published in Osteoporosis International.
Analytical model of health effects
Researchers at NTNU and the University of Oslo used an advanced analytical model to investigate the total health effect of taking a combined calcium and vitamin D supplement, compared to taking no supplements, based on a group of healthy women aged 65 with a BMI of 24 kg/m2.
"Our analysis shows that if 100 000 65-year-old women take 1000 mg calcium every day, 5890 hip fractures and 3820 other fractures would be prevented. On the other hand, as many as 5917 heart attacks and 4373 strokes could be caused. So for women of this age, the risks outweigh the benefits," the authors of the study wrote in an article in Aftenposten, one of Norway's national newspapers.
Recent studies of the effect of calcium supplementation on the risks of heart attack and stroke differ in their conclusions, so the researchers used three different scenarios based on results from previous studies.
The high-risk model predicted that more than 10 000 heart attacks and strokes would be caused by supplemental calcium and vitamin D in a group of 100 000 65-year-old women, whereas the medium-risk model predicted about 5000.
Both models showed that the number of years of high-quality life lost by taking calcium was higher than the number of years of high-quality life saved by preventing broken bones.
Benefits are nullified
The study also investigated the cost-effectiveness of offering 65-year-old women supplemental calcium and vitamin D, assuming that the women were at low risk of cardiovascular problems. In this case, the authors concluded that providing supplements is cost-effective and good for public health, given that the benefits outweigh the risks.
If the supplement increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, however, both the savings and the public health benefits are lost.
Hagen says one possible solution is to prescribe medicines that help prevent osteoporosis along with vitamin supplements.
"If we provide a preventative osteoporosis medication in addition to a supplement, it will increase the effect of preventing bone fractures, and have a positive risk/gain ratio, resulting in reduced costs," says Hagen.
Don't know if calcium increases risk of heat disease
The researchers point out that it isn't possible to conclude that calcium increases risk of cardiovascular disease, and that the analysis needs to be seen in light of this uncertainty.
At the same time, their models are simplifications that can't replace studies done on actual people.
"We don't know for sure if calcium has this negative effect, but to be careful, we should choose to give another treatment to help prevent broken bones in older women," says Hagen.

The promise of probiotic foods and beverages such as yogurt and kefir is that the “good bacteria” they contain will populate the intestines and replace the “bad bacteria” that cause many so-called lifestyle diseases. Some researchers in Denmark say the products are “a waste of money,” because there are no apparent health benefits of probiotics for healthy people.
There are caveats. First, the researchers at the University of Copenhagen said that the research studies they reviewed tended to include small sample sizes, with the smallest study examining the effects on just 21 people, and the largest examining 81 people. The researchers who conducted those studies fed the subjects different strains of bacteria from different food products.
Second, while the Copenhagen scientists found no health benefits for healthy people, they did note that probiotics seem to help people suffering from various gut-bacteria-based maladies. For instance, some people who suffer gastro-intestinal distress from taking antibiotics seem to have found some relief from consuming probiotics.
The researchers said that larger, better-designed clinical studies need to be conducted. Still, they stated their conclusions firmly: “there is little evidence of an effect in healthy individuals,” the study concluded.
Food companies have spent the past several years touting products containing probiotics. Critics have pointed to the lack of evidence that probiotics have any beneficial health benefits. Some of them assert that the active bacteria are killed by stomach acids before they even reach the intestines.
However, research is mounting that gut bacteria is responsible for either good health or bad health, depending on its makeup. Some researchers have found that eating a diet high in fruits in vegetables and low in meats and carbohydrates tends to improve the microbiome — the civilization of bacteria the lives in the intestines.
Advocates of probiotics claim that they help with everything from allergies to obesity to cancer prevention. But the National Institutes of Health says that “benefits have not been conclusively demonstrated.”
The probiotic business, however, is booming, and it seems unlikely that food companies will ease up any time soon on their marketing efforts. Analysts believe the category, now representing about $1.3 billion in annual sales, will grow about 15% this year.
Last week, Clorox (of the namesake bleach) announced it had purchased Renew Life, a maker of probiotic supplements, for a reported sale price of about $290 million.
Danone, the French food conglomerate and the largest seller of yogurt in the world, reported about $28 billion in sales in 2014. About half of its product portfolio consists of fresh dairy products. Its Activia line, which specifically boasts its probiotics, recorded $2.7 billion sales, up from about $130 million in 2006. Danone is spending big on research of its own that it hopes will help it capture even more of the fractured market for probiotics.
