My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

That’s what we — Raj Punjabi and Noah Michelson, the co-hosts of HuffPost’s “Am I Doing It Wrong?” podcast — asked Dr. Madhureeta Achari, a neurologist in independent practice for 30 years, when she recently dropped by our studio.

Achari said the “No. 1 reason” for many of the problems she sees in patients is that they are “nutritionally deficient.”

The United States is suffering from “high-calorie malnutrition,” she noted, which means individuals are eating a lot of food but aren’t getting the vitamins and minerals they require from it.

“The brain has to have a balanced diet,” she said. “In terms of vitamins ... each of them does something. It’s like a finely tuned machine. So you can’t just fix one part, right? It’s like a car. If everything’s great, but one tire is flat, the car is still not going to go.”

Achari advised that if trying to get everything we need to keep our brains in superb shape feels “overwhelming,” we should concentrate on “eating the rainbow.” 

“[We should be eating] lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains — I think 90% of us, or something, consume most of our grains in an ultra-refined form. We need to go back to whole grains, whole foods, meats, fish, poultry that is whole ... and you want some dairy, and you want some nuts and seeds ... and you want to try to, throughout your day, get all of those things.”

Achari tells her patients to avoid supplements that claim to enhance brain function and instead focus on nutrition.

“They don’t help you,” she said, noting that the “wellness industrial complex” has promoted the “weird idea that somehow we are smarter than our bodies.”



“Eating means chewing,” she told us. “There’s this new culture of smoothies where everything goes into the gut before your teeth have ever chewed it. Teeth are the first part of the digestive system.”

Summary: Researchers find changes in masticatory stimuli can modulate neurogenesis and hippocampal function. Published in the Journal of Dental Research, findings reveal reduced mastication impaired learning and memory function in mice.

According to researchers, the frequency of mastication has dramatically decreased along with changes in dietary habits. Masticatory stimulation has influence on the development of the central nervous system as well as the growth of maxillofacial tissue in children. Deterioration of masticatory function due to aging and the consequent reduction of brain function has become major problems. Although the relationship between mastication and brain function is potentially important, the mechanism underlying is not fully understood.
In order to prevent brain function disorders, including those relating to memory and learning, it is an urgent task to elucidate the linkage between masticatory function and brain function.
Researchers found that growth of the maxillofacial bone and muscle were suppressed in mice with reduced masticatory stimuli by feeding with powder food. In addition, behavioral experiments revealed that reduced mastication impaired memory and learning functions. In the hippocampus, a major component responsible for memory, neural activity, synapse formation and expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were reduced in these mice .
Thus, the authors demonstrated that the changes in masticatory stimuli can modulate neurogenesis and neuronal activity in the hippocampus, functionally contributing to cognitive function.
This research suggests that maintaining or strengthening of masticatory function would be effective in preventing dementia and memory/learning dysfunction. It is also suggested that further elucidation of the mechanism linking mastication and brain function can lead to novel treatments and preventive measures for memory/learning dysfunction in the future.

Abstract

Adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus has been shown to affect mood, cognition, learning ability and memory. A growing area of interest is whether mastication or chewing also affects AHN. This article aims to collect the evidence from animal and human studies to ascertain whether mastication is an oral environment enrichment capable of having a modulatory effect on AHN and associated behaviors.
Current data point toward a causal relationship between masticatory ability and cognitive function. Experimental studies on mice and rats have consistently shown that impairing masticatory function results in physical and behavioral changes. A recurring theme of decreased neural stem cells proliferation in the hippocampus was seen in most of the studies found. Human population study has shown that tooth loss and masticatory difficulty are positively correlated with having greater odds of cognitive impairment. However, no causal mechanism has yet been found to explain the effects of mastication on AHN.
Further clinical studies, in humans, are currently conducted to ascertain whether mastication could be used as a potential health intervention to slowdown cognitive decline in the aging population or delay the onset of diseases such as dementia.
