Changing stroke rehab and research worldwide now.Time is Brain! trillions and trillions of neurons that DIE each day because there are NO effective hyperacute therapies besides tPA(only 12% effective). I have 523 posts on hyperacute therapy, enough for researchers to spend decades proving them out. These are my personal ideas and blog on stroke rehabilitation and stroke research. Do not attempt any of these without checking with your medical provider. Unless you join me in agitating, when you need these therapies they won't be there.

What this blog is for:

My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

Reverse Stroke | Amazing New Stroke Cure

There is NO clinical evidence that etanercept does anything at all. But wonderful anecdotal comments and edited videos make it seem like magic. Even 60 minutes got bamboozled.

“When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?”

Which aphorism is your doctor giving you to let you know just how damned difficult stroke recovery is? Because your doctor has absolutely nothing that can help you recover. The work needed to recover is all upon you to do.  Magic like stem cells and directed neurogenesis are decades off.

“Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.”

“To talk much and arrive nowhere is the same as climbing a tree to catch a fish”

“If you get up one more time than you fall you will make it through.”

“People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.”

“Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself”

“Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it's less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you've lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that's good.”
― Elizabeth Edwards

“Sometimes life knocks you on your ass... get up, get up, get up!!! Happiness is not the absence of problems, it's the ability to deal with them.”
― Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free

Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?

Every day that we live on this earth we make choices. Things happen, we make decisions, and that shapes our life. It’s that simple, but do we put enough thought into how we react to things that happen to us?

Sometimes we’re so busy that we just react rather that think. As with many things, a slight pause will create a moment of increased awareness of the words we choose to speak or the actions we choose to take. This affects every single aspect of our lives, and it’s especially true in relationships.
Want to be a better person? Pause and choose wisely!
Here’s a short story to help you remember that how we respond to situations is our choice:

Potatoes, Eggs and Coffee Beans

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He took the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.
Turning to her, he asked. “What do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she hastily replied.
“Look closer”, he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft.
He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.
Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.
“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.
He explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity – the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently.
The potato went in strong, hard and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard. However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.
“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?”
The moral of the story:
In life, things happen around us, and things happen to us. The only thing that truly matters is your choice of how you react to it and what you make of it. Learn, adapt and choose to make the best of each experience.

Andrew Marr's stroke treatment in America results in subtle changes but not 'dramatic improvements'

Broadcaster Andrew Marr said a new treatment he received after suffering a stroke has resulted in subtle changes, but not the "dramatic improvements" he hoped for.
The BBC presenter, who had a stroke almost four years ago and remains semi-paralysed on his left side, travelled to Florida to try a new anti-inflammatory drug called Etanercept.

Marr told the Press Association in a statement: "Although I haven't seen the dramatic improvements that I hoped for, there have been subtle and useful changes which I am going to work on through physiotherapy and exercise over the coming months.
"It hasn't been 'pick up thy bed and walk' but it hasn't been nothing, either. We will tell the fuller story in a BBC documentary scheduled to be broadcast in January."
Marr's stroke in January 2013 left him spending two months in hospital and undergoing extensive physiotherapy to help him walk.

In a piece for the Spectator recently, talking about the new treatment, he detailed some of the effects of stroke he has to deal with.
He wrote: "I'm not complaining too much: I can work, drink, see friends, paint, listen to music and irritate my children like before. I'm a lucky fellow.
"But I can't run or cycle or swim, and I walk very unsteadily and slowly. I drop things and take ages to get dressed."

Three hours has been determined as the optimal initial time spent on rehab post-stroke per day, according to the hospital’s occupational therapist Candice Stewart.

This line in this story has got to be completely and totally wrong. 3 hours a day might get back some of the minimally damaged penumbra but will do nothing  for any major damage or dead areas. If the patient is not doing hands-on therapy with a therapist, even waking minute should be spent:
1. Listening to music.

Exploring a Neuroplasticity Model of Music Therapy

2. Watching action observation gifs and videos.

Plasticity and Response to Action Observation

3. Doing mental imagery.

New psychology research supporting stroke rehabilitation

KINESTHETIC IMAGERY TRAINING OF FORCEFUL MUSCLE CONTRACTIONS INCREASES BRAIN SIGNAL AND MUSCLE STRENGTH

Patients should have no downtime except to sleep and with that they should be trained in lucid dreaming. There is no place for slackers in stroke recovery. Eating should be therapy, using your affected side. The foods you eat should be proven as stroke prevention. If you aren't working the hardest you have ever worked in your life you aren't going to recover to the best of your ability. Nothing your doctor or therapist does will magically make your recovery occur. ALL the work is for you to accomplish.

Barriers preventing post-stroke care

Every survivor that writes about recovery states it is extremely hard, repetitive and time-consuming. Don't doctors and therapists understand that that needs to be forcefully communicated to all survivors? Along with the fact that magic doesn't occur. If you don't do the work, you won't recover.
http://medicalxpress.com/news/2014-07-barriers-post-stroke.html
For stroke victims, rehabilitation is crucial to their recovery. But a Flinders University study conducted in Singapore found that rehabilitation rates following discharge from hospital are poor because of gaps in the continuum of stroke care.
The study – published last month in the International Journal of Therapy and Rehabilitation – identified five major barriers to post-stroke rehabilitation in Singapore including; difficulties accessing rehabilitative services; gaps in discharge coordination; the influence of family members; discrepancies in expectation; and the perception that rehabilitation is simple. As part of the research, interviews were conducted with 68 who were discharged from a Singapore rehabilitation unit between December 2012 and April 2013. Of those, 31 participants reported not following recommendations to continue their rehabilitation. There was no difference in gender, age or type of stroke between those who did and not complete the rehabilitation.
Flinders Clinical Rehabilitation lecturer Dr Christopher Barr, a co-investigator of the study, said access barriers, including mobility difficulties and transport costs, along with affordability of services, were the chief obstacles precluding rehabilitation.
"The lack of transport means and the associated costs were the main barriers that hindered adherence to continuing post-stroke rehabilitation," Dr Barr said.
"Affordability of services also had a direct influence, with one participant's family member stating: 'money is a concern and also who [is going] to bring my dad to therapy'," he said.
"Gaps in the transition from hospital to outpatient services were also cited as a reason for not continuing rehabilitation – in some cases participants fell through the unnoticed gap and were left waiting for follow-up appointments."
Dr Barr said family members were either facilitators or inhibitors of rehabilitation: "One participant said they have to prompt their mother to go because they think it's good for her but another participant said they missed two appointments because their son forgot.
"It wasn't uncommon for patients and carers to feel stranded and helpless."
Dr Barr said most participants regarded rehabilitation as simple, common-sense knowledge that could easily be self-replicated or substituted without the help of a therapist, leading them to seek alternatives to their therapy recommendation.
He said the findings highlighted the need to review current goal-setting processes for rehabilitation and the need to establish a common understanding of rehabilitation practice between patients, carers and clinicians.
"Clinicians need to be more aware of their role in providing well-coordinated information about therapy, and goals need to be more patient-centred to reduce the discrepancies in expectations of rehabilitation.
"Carers also need to be more empowered and involved in discharge planning to minimise the dissatisfaction in care arrangements and information delivery."

Does your stroke doctor believe in magic?

I bet they will say no.
But have they said, 'All strokes are different, all stroke recoveries are different'?    Total magical expectation there.
'You will fully recover.'   With only 10% getting to full recovery, that is a whopping lot of magical thinking.

'If you work on movements and exercise, neuroplasticity will help you recover'  They have no explanation for how it works so it has to be magic.
And to think we are actually paying these people for their magical wishes.

MANY benefits that can be felt someone so doing medicine regenerative medicine (RM). That's because this method can help improve the body's cells to organs and also revitalize the immune system.
It was as revealed by Prof. DR. Nor Shahidah Khairullah as Corporate Director of Medical Services Villa Medica International. He explained that various benefits can be felt someone from RM, either from the smallest to the biggest thing. That's because RM can improve organ function that is certain to decline further over time are, like the brain, liver, heart and other vital organs. Thus, away from a person's health will be guaranteed and aura will shine out.

Please note RM is a method of stem cell therapy using fresh cells, or often called Fresh Cells Therapy (FCT). Was first developed by a Swiss surgeon named Prof. Dr.. Paul Niehans in 1931 and now has become a primary therapy for cells to repair organs. This method has long proven to be a preventive effect of various diseases, but also can cure diseases declared medically generally can not be cured.

"Four points of regenerative medicine is to revitalize the body's systems, regenerate organ damage, improve the body's immune system, and slows aging. Terms of the appearance of someone who underwent regenerative medicine become younger, more energetic, have good quality sleep, the skin become more beautiful, "he said during a conversation with Okezone, in the event a press conference Mobiliari Aesthetics & Luxury Fair 2013, Main Atrium, Plaza Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (10/8/20

Not only limited to preventive, he said, the RM through the Fresh Cell Therapy can also treat the problem of cardiovascular disease patients, degenerative disease, hormone imbalance disorders and other ailments that are difficult healed. All that has been shown to help their health problems.

"From joint pain to degenerative diseases that occur due to the plaque and thrombosis stroke, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Down syndrome up. All that can be helped by regenerative medicine. Been first child four years of this therapy, at the age of twelve years has been progressing rapidly, especially the brain functions. thing because regenerative medicine could give life to the dead cells, either in the liver, heart and brain and other options, "he explained.

Meanwhile, the beneficial effects of this therapy alone could reach one year or more. But it depends on the conditions in which their lifestyle as they could with the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle, the benefits can last a long time. Conversely, if a person can not maintain a lifestyle like sleeping less than eight hours, like a bite to eat junk food or unhealthy, lazy to exercise, the benefits of this treatment can be easily lost.

Cure stroke with magic

A search term that found my blog. It was eighth in line. I'm hoping that these searches were not serious.
These two search results actually assume magic works.

A Magic Remedy from China Can Cure Stroke Paralysis

A Magic Remedy for Treatment for Stroke Victims

These are using Appeal to tradition to try to prove their case.

(also known as argumentum ad antiquitatem, appeal to antiquity, or appeal to common practice) is a common fallacy in which a thesis is deemed correct on the basis that it correlates with some past or present tradition. The appeal takes the form of "this is right because we've always done it this way."

And why hasn't your doctor been using this magic? Conspiracy anyone? Stroke is needed because those 15 million strokes a year employ millions of people. The world economy might collapse without all this disability and death.

Neuroaid - It’s sold in 25 countries and 20,000 people have taken it, but herbal remedy proves no better than placebo in trial

I need to repeat myself here because we need scientifically proven results. So send your doctor back to the drawing board and demand some action on stroke rehab. When are people going to understand that once the stroke has resolved itself over the first week that there is no magical drug that will bring back function. Doesn't your doctor tell you those facts?
Neuroaid - It’s sold in 25 countries and 20,000 people have taken it, but herbal remedy proves no better than placebo in trial

A Chinese herbal remedy marketed to improve stroke recovery failed to exceed the benefits of a placebo in a large, three-month clinical trial.
"There's no evidence of efficacy," said Dr. James Brorson, medical director of the University of Chicago Stroke Center, who was not involved in the study.
Still, the researchers are not completely discouraged by the results.
"Yes, we had hoped for a larger effect, but the results of the trial suggest that this may be the case for certain groups of patients," said Dr. Christopher Chen, the report's lead author and a professor at the National University of Singapore.
Chen's research was supported in part by Moleac, the company that markets the herbal medicine, called NeuroAiD.
NeuroAiD is a blend of extracts from plants, leeches, beetles, scorpions and antelope horn.
Some earlier studies had hinted that the compound could help people recover from an ischemic stroke, the most common kind, caused by a blood vessel blockage in the brain.
According to David Picard, the CEO of Moleac, NeuroAiD is sold in at least 25 countries, and 20,000 people have taken it. (Who cares how many have taken it? Results, results, results)

Jeri Rowe: Shot offers hope in stroke recovery

Well, the PR is working for etanercept. With no clinical trials this is masterful magical thinking.
This here seems to be the only study referenced in PubMed and its only observational;

Selective TNF inhibition for chronic stroke and traumatic brain injury: an observational study involving 629 consecutive patients treated with perispinal etanercept

If the idea is to get Enbrel into the brain why do it this way?
Why not have your doctor try the nasal to brain route. I have 13 posts on it with this one being the most interesting.
