The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

We examine the impact of chewing gum on a Bakan-type
vigilance task that requires the continual updating of short-term order
memory. Forty participants completed a 30-min auditory Bakan-task either
with, or without, the requirement to chew gum. Self-rated measures of
mood were taken both pre- and post-task. As expected, the vigilance task
produced a time-dependent performance decrement indexed via decreases
in target detections and lengthened correct reaction times (RTs), and a
reduction in post-task self-rated alertness scores. The declines in both
performance and subjective alertness were attenuated in the chewing-gum
group. In particular, correct RTs were significantly shorter following
the chewing of gum in the latter stages of the task. Additionally, the
gradients of decline for target detection and incline for correct RTs
were both attenuated for the chewing-gum group. These findings are
consistent with the data of Tucha and Simpson (2011), Appetite, 56,
299–301, who showed beneficial effects of chewing gum in the latter
stages of a 30 min visual attention task, and extend their data to a
task that necessitates the continuous updating of order memory. It is
noteworthy that our data contradict the claim (Kozlov, Hughes, &
Jones, 2012, Q. J. Exp. Psychology, 65, 501–513) that chewing gum negatively impacts short-term memory task performance.
If your doctor is incompetent and doesn't have you chewing gum immediately post stroke per # 6 below, I'd suggest you find a new doctor. We have to get rid of a lot of dead wood in stroke, starting with our doctors and therapists who are not up-to-date.
Your doctor should have had a chewing gum protocol since March 2012. No
protocol, call the president and ask when incompetence will be removed.

digestive system after having major bowel surgery. So, the next time
you’re feeling a bit constipated, reach for some gum instead of a

gum is more effective at combating nausea than leading drugs. In one
study, women who felt sick after surgery were given one of two things
while recovering: a stick of Wrigley’s peppermint gum or the anti-nausea
drug ondansetron. The results of the study showed that the gum was
effective for 75 percent of the patients and fully resolved their
problems within 10 minutes. The anti-nausea drug, on the other hand, was
only effective for 37 percent of the patients.
7. It Gets Rid Of “Earworms”

or thinking about it all day long. We’ve all been there at one time or
another. But, most of us probably didn’t know that we could get rid of

for creating that earworm in the first place becomes distracted by the
repetitive nature of chewing gum.
6. It Improves Memory
According to SelectHealth, Utah’s top-ranked health insurance plan, professor Andrew Sholey discovered that short-term memory could be improved by 35 percent by chewing a stick of gum.
In fact, multiple studies have shown that chewing gum boosts mental
performance. The reason is that chewing increases blood flow to the
brain by as much as 25 to 40 percent. This increase in blood flow to the
brain increases oxygen to the brain. And, this helps boost memory and
other cognitive functions. Note: Don’t get carried away with the chewing gum, though. Chewing on it for too long can actually decrease your short-term memory!

Chewing
gum can distract you from certain addictions, like cigarette cravings.
In fact, there are certain gums that are made to help people quit

smoker’s system as a way to wean them off of cigarettes.

4. It Relieves Ear Pain During Flights

very bothersome. Perhaps you’ve tried to remedy the situation by
yawning or pinching your nose. But, there’s a simpler solution: popping a
stick of gum into your mouth. The extra saliva produced when you chew
gum allows you to swallow more, which can help to equalize the pressure
in your ears.
3. It Decreases Depression

it’s true. That’s because chewing gum stimulates your glands to produce
more saliva. In fact, it stimulates saliva up to 10 times the resting

tooth decay. But, it’s not just the chewing action that prevents tooth decay.

fight cavities, plaque, tartar, gingivitis, and bad breath. Chewing gum,
then, is something we can do in addition to brushing, flossing, and
visiting the dentist regularly.
-Look for gums containing xylitol, a low-calorie sugar substitute that supplies minerals to your teeth.

We pop a piece after a boldly flavored lunch to put the kibosh on
that garlic breath. We reach for a piece when we feel a little hungry
but aren’t ready to eat a full meal just yet. And we snag another piece
when we’re caught in an uncomfortable situation and need that oral
fixation to help take the edge off (and distract you from the
awkwardness). We’re gum chewers, and it’s not doing our health any
favors.

1. It’s really bad for your teeth.
Unless you opt
for sugar-free gum 100 percent of the time, that gum chewing habit is

time, so those windows of time increase the amount of plaque buildup on
your teeth and cause tooth decay to occur over time.
2. It could cause jaw problems.
Another common side effect of chewing gum, especially during times of high stress, is called temporomandibular joint dysfunction,
or TMJ. It predominantly affects the jaw, jaw joint and surrounding
muscles, leading to severe pain any time you try to move your jaw away
from its typical closed alignment. It hurts to chew your food, it hurts
to laugh… Pretty much everything related to moving your mouth hurts.
3. It can give you a lot of headaches.
That constant compression in your jaw from excessive chewing does
more than predispose you to conditions like TMJ — it also increases the
number of tension headaches you experience and how frequently they
present themselves. So if you’re someone who already deals with a
migraine disorder or frequent headaches due to the common stressors and
anxiety triggers in your life, you’re better off staying away from
chewing gum altogether.
4. It can make your indigestion symptoms worse.
A lot of people chew gum to help relieve feelings of nausea or
an upset stomach, but gum can make these unpleasant symptoms worse.
When you chew gum, you swallow a bunch of little sips of air over time, filling your stomach with unwanted gas.
This process can lead to additional bloating and make your tummy feel
even more distended than it did before. Talk about an unhappy digestive
system…
5. It can make folks with IBS truly miserable.
For
the people out there who think sugarless gum is the way to go because
it has fewer calories, be mindful if you have any sensitive stomach
issues or digestive problems. The sugar alcohols that serve as
artificial sweeteners can act as laxatives, causing things like cramping, digestive distress and even diarrhea.
Those with irritable bowel syndrome are best off staying away from all
products that contain a significant amount of sugar alcohols — not just
chewing gum.
6. Its reputation as a diet aid can backfire.
Many
people chew gum to curb unwanted (and unhealthy) snacking cravings and
avoid weight gain, but the constant chewing motion can actually trigger the brain to think that your body actually is hungry.
That means that you still end up digging in and eating more than you

prefer mint gum, that flavor makes you more likely to reach for junk

PARIS -- October 30, 2017 -- Taste perception improves in patients
with multiple sclerosis (MS) receiving nabiximols for spasticity if they
chew gum after taking the medication and keep the medication
refrigerated, according to a study presented here at the 7th Joint
Meeting of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple
Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) and the American Committee for Treatment and
Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ACTRIMS).
Nabiximols is an oromucosal spray formulated in a 1:1 ratio of
tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol and approved in several countries
for treatment-resistant spasticity in patients with MS.
Giacomo Lus, MD, Second University of Naples, Naples, Italy, presented the findings on October 27.
Spasticity is common in MS, and its severity increases with disease
progression. Despite the availability of oral antispasticity drugs, such
as baclofen and tizanidine, and physiotherapy, one-third of patients
with MS continue to experience moderate or severe generalised
spasticity.
Although nabiximols has been shown to reduce associated
treatment-resistant MS in up to two-thirds of patients after reaching an
average dose of 6 to 8 sprays/day, ~10% of patients stop treatment
because of taste alterations. Oral cavity-related complaints such as dry
mouth, oral mucosal disorders, tooth colour changes, and alterations
are also common.
The researchers conducted a study to determine whether the use of
sugar-free chewing gum after each nabiximols treatment would improve
taste tolerability without interfering with the drug’s effectiveness.
They also tested whether refrigerating nabiximols would improve taste
tolerability.
Primary endpoints were nabiximols taste perception and oral cavity abnormalities.
Patients were randomised into 3 arms: sugar-free chewing gum (n =
15), refrigerated nabiximols spray bottle (n = 20), and refrigerated
nabiximols spray bottle plus sugar-free chewing gum (n = 17).
From baseline to week 4, bad taste perception was reduced from 87% to
40% with chewing gum alone, from 90% to 80% with refrigerated
nabiximols alone, and from 100% to 17.6% with combined use of
refrigerated nabiximols and chewing gum.
A numeric improvement (0-10 scale) was seen in oral cavity anomalies
from baseline to week 4 in all groups. Mean overall scores were reduced
from 4.73 to 3.56 for dry mouth, 4.40 to 2.60 for taste alteration, and
2.86 to 1.67 for oral mucosa discomfort (irritation or pain).
The novel strategy did not interfere with spasticity control.

to researchers, the frequency of mastication has dramatically decreased
along with changes in dietary habits. Masticatory stimulation has
influence on the development of the central nervous system as well as
the growth of maxillofacial tissue in children. Deterioration of
masticatory function due to aging and the consequent reduction of brain
function has become major problems. Although the relationship between
mastication and brain function is potentially important, the mechanism
underlying is not fully understood.
In order to prevent
brain function disorders, including those relating to memory and
learning, it is an urgent task to elucidate the linkage between
masticatory function and brain function.
Researchers found that
growth of the maxillofacial bone and muscle were suppressed in mice with
reduced masticatory stimuli by feeding with powder food. In addition,
behavioral experiments revealed that reduced mastication impaired memory
and learning functions. In the hippocampus, a major component
responsible for memory, neural activity, synapse formation and
expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were reduced in
these mice .
Thus, the authors demonstrated that the changes in
masticatory stimuli can modulate neurogenesis and neuronal activity in
the hippocampus, functionally contributing to cognitive function.
This
research suggests that maintaining or strengthening of masticatory
function would be effective in preventing dementia and memory/learning
dysfunction. It is also suggested that further elucidation of the
mechanism linking mastication and brain function can lead to novel
treatments and preventive measures for memory/learning dysfunction in
the future.

Another item for our doctors to add to their vast repertoire of stroke rehab. You do want your survivor to be alert and have better cognitive performance, don't you? In recent years, chewing has been
discussed as producing effects of maintaining and sustaining cognitive
performance. We have reported that chewing may improve or recover the
process of working memory; however, the mechanisms underlying these
phenomena are still to be elucidated. We investigated the effect of
chewing on aspects of attention and cognitive processing speed, testing
the hypothesis that this effect induces higher cognitive performance.
Seventeen healthy adults (20-34 years old) were studied during attention
task with blood oxygenation level-dependent functional (fMRI) at 3.0 T
MRI. The attentional network test (ANT) within a single task fMRI
containing two cue conditions (no cue and center cue) and two target
conditions (congruent and incongruent) was conducted to examine the
efficiency of alerting and executive control. Participants were
instructed to press a button with the right or left thumb according to
the direction of a centrally presented arrow. Each participant underwent
two back-to-back ANT sessions with or without chewing gum, odorless and
tasteless to remove any effect other than chewing. Behavioral results
showed that mean reaction time was significantly decreased during
chewing condition, regardless of speed-accuracy trade-off, although
there were no significant changes in behavioral effects (both alerting
and conflict effects). On the other hand, fMRI analysis revealed higher
activations in the anterior cingulate cortex and left frontal gyrus for
the executive network and motor-related regions for both attentional
networks during chewing condition. These results suggested that chewing
induced an increase in the arousal level and alertness in addition to an
effect on motor control and, as a consequence, these effects could lead
to improvements in cognitive performance.
