The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

These vascular risks are strongly associated with severe stroke, researchers say

             Many risk factors can lead to a stroke, but the magnitude of risk from some of these conditions or behaviors may have a stronger association with severe stroke compared with mild stroke, according to a new study.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death around the world, according to a November 2018 study, causing around 5.5 million deaths annually.

“A stroke occurs when the central nervous system is injured due to a vascular cause, so that could be due to a blockage, which accounts for about 80% of strokes in the United States, or a ruptured blood vessel, which is a hemorrhage, and that’s 20% of strokes in the United States,” said Dr. Steve Messe, professor of neurology at the University of Pennsylvania, who wasn’t involved in the study.

Some risks associated with stroke are hypertension (high blood pressure), atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) and smoking, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study, which published Wednesday in the journal Neurology, revisited data collected between 2007 and 2015 as part of the INTERSTROKE study. Patients were recruited from 142 centers in 32 countries and given standardized questionnaires to measure risk factors, according to the study.

Researchers observed 13,460 patients with stroke and divided the cases based on whether they suffered from a severe or non-severe stroke, which they categorized using a six-point scale that measures a patient’s degree of disability.

“This study looked at the association between modifiable risk factors with severe and mild-moderate stroke. Three risk factors — high blood pressure, smoking and atrial fibrillation (which is an irregular heart rhythm) were linked with higher risk of severe compared to mild-moderate stroke,” said Dr. Catriona Reddin, the first study author, via email. “This emphasises the importance of managing these risk factors, along with other risk factors of stroke.”

Prior research has linked obesity, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol to strokes, which is consistent with this new study’s findings.

“Our study highlights that some risk factors are particularly important for severe stroke. We hope that hearing the results of our study may emphasise the importance of managing risk factors of stroke,” said Reddin, geriatric medicine specialist registrar at University Hospital Galway and research fellow at University of Galway in Ireland.

Are you at risk of a stroke?

High blood pressure is a risk that most people underestimate, and since 50% of Americans have high blood pressure, it’s an important risk factor to consider, said Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver, who wasn’t involved in the study. (Freeman is also a medical adviser for WeWard, an activity-tracking app that also incentivizes users to move by letting them accrue points they can redeem for prizes or charity donations. He hasn’t received any financial compensation.)

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can result from an unhealthy lifestyle or certain health conditions, such as diabetes or obesity. The condition can also occur during pregnancy.

Hypertension can damage your heart’s tissue and conduction system, leading to atrial fibrillation, or an irregular heartbeat, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Smoking is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease and can cause the blood to clot and block blood flow to the heart and brain.

“It’s not just tobacco smoke, but marijuana smoke or even really bad air pollution can significantly lead to increased vascular events and risks,” Freeman said.

How to prevent a stroke

Focusing on eating plants, exercising more, stressing less, loving more and sleeping enough can help you lower the risk of stroke, according to Freeman.

Reducing salt in your diet, avoiding high-cholesterol foods, and eating fresh fruits and vegetables can help to lower blood pressure.

Keeping active can also lower blood pressure and help you maintain a healthy weight. In fact, people who are more active have a 25% to 30% lower risk of stroke than the least active people, according to the American Heart Association.

Exercise has also been found to reduce the negative effects of stress, including spikes in blood pressure, by boosting the production of endorphins.

However, if you suspect that you or someone around you is having a stroke, immediately call 911 and get to an ER as soon as possible, Messe said. Stroke treatment is time-sensitive, so it’s important to move quickly.

Ideal CV health scores confer lower risk for most stroke subtypes

 As far as I can tell this is just distractions from the FACT there IS NOTHING TO GET YOU EVEN MINIMALLY CLOSE TO 100% RECOVERY.  Hey, look over here; a squirrel! Because this is just setting the stage for your doctor to blame you for having a stroke and if you don't recover, that's on you also.  Don't look to your doctor for recovery, they know absolutely nothing. Ask them, their answer will prove that. They'll mention useless guidelines but NO PROTOCOLS and besides they already let billions of neurons die during the first week in the neuronal cascade of death. Bet they didn't mention that.

I was off the charts on my physical activity so I should have not had a stroke, but there are no hereditary metrics in here. My dad had 85% carotid blockage and his doctor did not inform him to have his children tested for blockage.

Ideal American Heart Association CV health scores were associated with substantially lower risks for stroke, ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage and unspecified stroke, but not subarachnoid hemorrhage, researchers reported.

“Previous studies ... showed that better CV health was associated with lower risks of stroke; however, there were also some studies that found no significant association between global CV health score and stroke,” Zhi Cao, MD, from the School of Public Health at Tianjin Medical University and the department of big data in health science at the School of Public Health and Zhejiang University School of Medicine in Hangzhou, China, and colleagues wrote in EClinicalMedicine, a clinical journal published by The Lancet. “Moreover, data are sparse regarding the influence of behavioral and biological CV health status on the risks of stroke subtypes, including ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage.”

Ideal American Heart Association CV health scores were associated with substantially lower risks for stroke, ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage and unspecified stroke, but not subarachnoid hemorrhage. Data were derived from Cao Z, et al. EClinicalMedicine. 2021;doi:10.1016/j.eclinm.2021.100791.

The AHA Life’s Simple 7 measures of ideal CV health include smoking, diet, physical activity and BMI as behavioral metrics and blood glucose, blood cholesterol and BP as biological metrics.

The researchers analyzed 354,976 participants (55% women) aged 40 to 70 years without stroke and CHD from the UK Biobank from 2006 to 2010 who were followed up to 2020. Participants’ CV scores were categorized into poor, intermediate and ideal groups.

During a median follow-up period of 11 years, researchers observed 5,804 incident stroke cases that included 3,664 cases of ischemic stroke, 714 cases of intracerebral hemorrhage, 453 cases of subarachnoid hemorrhage and 426 cases of unspecified stroke. In the cohort, 21.2% of participants were categorized as having poor CV health scores, 64.3% were categorized as intermediate and 14.5% were categorized as ideal.

There was a significant reduction in risk for stroke with both increasing behavioral CV health scores (HR = 0.9; 95% CI, 0.88-0.91) and biological CV health scores (HR = 0.82; 95% CI, 0.8-0.84). Participants in the ideal behavioral CV health group demonstrated significantly lower risks for all stroke subtypes. Those in the ideal biological CV health group had reduced risk for all stroke events except subarachnoid hemorrhage (HR = 1.24; 95% CI, 0.88-1.76), according to the researchers.

Each 1-point increment in global CV health score was associated with 13% lower risk for ischemic stroke and unspecified stroke, 11% lower risk for stroke and 8% lower risk for intracerebral hemorrhage. Overall, participants with poor behavioral and biological CV health had a nearly threefold increased risk for stroke compared with participants with ideal behavioral and biological CV health scores (HR = 2.78; 95% CI, 2.36-3.28).

Researchers observed no significant dose-dependent association between global CV health and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

“Our study highlights the benefits of maintaining better CV health across the life course and call attention to the need for comprehensive strategies to preserve and restore high CV health score to prevent stroke events,” the researchers wrote.

A Borough Park hospital’s center for stroke patients has the highest survival rate of any stroke program in the country, according to a recent federal mortality report.
Maimonides Medical Center’s Comprehensive Stroke Center — located on 48th Street between Ninth and 10th avenues — includes physicians and nurses in emergency medicine, and offers neurosurgery, and rehabilitation medicine to treat Brooklyn’s stroke patients. According to the program’s director, stroke programs are more necessary than ever.
“A person suffers a stroke approximately every 40 seconds in the U.S.,” said Dr. Tony Qingliang Wang. “Someone dies from stroke every four minutes, and 80 percent of strokes can be prevented. So when it comes to diagnosis and treatment, every moment counts.”
The report’s finding is not the first time Maimonides’ stroke center has been recognized for its excellence. The stroke program also earned top honors from the American Stroke Association for its eighth consecutive year, a prestige one hospital executive held up as evidence of the medical center’s high standards.
“The outstanding careNOT RECOVERY!) that is delivered demonstrates one of the many reasons why our hospital is among the Top 10 in the nation for overall clinical excellence,” said Kenneth D. Gibbs.
On July 15, local pols joined Maimonides doctors during the hospital’s “Stroke Awareness Flag-Raising,” during which doctors stressed the importance of acting fast when stroke symptoms occur, causing face-drooping, imbalance, loss of vision and slurred speech.
“If you suspect you or a loved one may be experiencing a stroke, phoning 911 immediately can make a big difference,” said Dr. Wang.

Do not disturb! How the brain filters out distractions

This seems incredibly important for our doctors to be able to fix in stroke survivors. Everyone I know complains about not being able to concentrate on tasks due to distractions.

You know the feeling? You are trying to dial a phone number from memory… you have to concentrate…. then someone starts shouting out other numbers nearby. In a situation like that, your brain must ignore the distraction as best it can so as not to lose vital information from its working memory. A new paper published in Neuron by a team of neurobiologists led by Professor Andreas Nieder at the University of Tübingen gives insight into just how the brain manages this problem.

The researchers put rhesus monkey in a similar situation. The monkeys had to remember the number of dots in an image and reproduce the knowledge a moment later. While they were taking in the information, a distraction was introduced, showing a different number of dots. And even though the monkeys were mostly able to ignore the distraction, their concentration was disturbed and their memory performance suffered.

Measurements of the electrical activity of nerve cells in two key areas of the brain showed a surprising result: nerve cells in the prefrontal cortex signaled the distraction while it was being presented, but immediately restored the remembered information (the number of dots) once the distraction was switched off. In contrast, nerve cells in the parietal cortex were unimpressed by the distraction and reliably transmitted the information about the correct number of dots.

These findings provide important clues about the strategies and division of labor among different parts of the brain when it comes to using the working memory. “Different parts of the brain appear to use different strategies to filter out distractions,” says Dr. Simon Jacob, who carried out research in Tübingen before switching to the Psychiatric Clinic at the Charité hospitals in Berlin. “Nerve cells in the parietal cortex simply suppress the distraction, while nerve cells in the prefrontal cortex allow themselves to be momentarily distracted – only to return immediately to the truly important memory content.”

The researchers were surprised by the two brain areas’ difference in sensitivity to distraction. “We had assumed that the prefrontal cortex is able to filter out all kinds of distractions, while the parietal cortex was considered more vulnerable to disturbances,” says Professor Nieder. “We will have to rethink that. The memory-storage tasks and the strategies of each brain area are distributed differently from what we expected.”
