WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital receives DNV Primary Stroke Center accreditation
PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) — WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital received a DNV Primary Stroke Center accreditation.
According to a press release, the accreditation that WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital received is not only an important stroke care(NOT RECOVERY!) milestone for the region, it also shows the standards that PCH meets for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of stroke patients, which helps ensure better outcomes for the community.
The press release stated that as a Primary Stroke Center, PCH will be able to receive and treat any stoke patients, and be able to evaluate, start treatment, and begin the needed rehabilitation for recovery. The accreditation shows that PCH offers evidence-based care(NOT RECOVERY!) that follows guidelines(Guidelines don't guarantee recovery; protocols do! GET THERE!) from the American Stroke Association (ASA) and American Heart Association (AHA).
According to the press release, PCH’s stoke program and data on patient outcomes was examined in order for them to receive the designation. During the first three quarters of 2025, PCH treated an average of 23 stroke patients each month.
The press release stated that comprehensive stroke protocols that were applied by PCH include:
- Specialized Training: All nurses caring for stroke patients are NIH Stroke Scale certified.
- Ongoing Education: Physicians and emergency department staff finish at least eight hours of stroke education each year.
- Rapid Response: The stroke team works with EMS to activate stroke alerts before patients arrive, ensuring immediate evaluation and imaging.
- Community Education: PCH promotes stroke awareness and provides education to students, the general public, emergency responders, and senior-serving organizations.
According to the press release, patients who arrive with stroke symptoms at WVU Medicine PCH will be quickly evaluated and could receive thrombolytic therapy (clot-busting medication) when necessary. After treatment, patients will be admitted for monitoring and start rehabilitation, such as physical, speech, and occupational therapy, within 24 hours. After they are discharged, many people continue outpatient rehab at WVU Medicine PCH.

The press release stated that stoke is the number five killer in the Mountain State, according to American Heart Association, ranking among the highest states for stroke risk factors such as obesity and smoking.
According to the press release from WVU Medicine PCH, people in West Virginia ” are also more likely to die after having a stroke.” The stroke mortality rate in West Virginia is 19 percent higher than in other states, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
