This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

5 Unusual Things Neurologists Do Every Day To Lower Their Risk Of Dementia

You won’t find brain puzzles on this list.

Because we are living longer than previous generations did, there is a higher likelihood that people will experience brain deterioration.

A study published last January showed that an estimated half a million people may be diagnosed with dementia this year. By 2060, the number is predicted to reach 1 million cases annually.

The aging population may be living with lifestyle chronic diseases like high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, which also raise a person’s dementia risk. “We estimate that about 40% of cases of dementia are preventable through lifestyle and other factors,” said Dr. Meredith Bock, neurologist and chief medical officer at Remo Health. Just because you carry a gene that puts you at a higher risk for developing dementia doesn’t mean that you will.

“There’s certainly a benefit to lifestyle interventions, both at reducing the time of onset of dementia or potentially getting it at all,” Bock said.

Some of these interventions, like getting plenty of exercise or doing brain puzzles, are well known. Others, however, may not be. Below, neurologists share the behaviors they do daily to keep their risk of dementia low, which may seem unusual to some:

They walk to their colleague’s office instead of sending an email.

Instead of being glued to a chair in front of a computer at work, Dr. Gabriel Leger, a neurologist at UC San Diego Health, is very intentional about getting up and moving to break up prolonged sitting periods.

“If I’m not with patients, I’m more likely to stand up and go across the building to speak to somebody instead of sending an email just because it gets me off the chair and makes me more active,” Leger said.

Our bodies weren’t designed to be still for prolonged periods, explained Leger. A 2023 study of nearly 50,000 adults revealed that 10 hours or more of sitting per day is linked to increased dementia risk.

They interact with people IRL as often as possible.

Another reason Leger will discuss a matter with a colleague face-to-face instead of simply sending an email is that interacting with other people helps preserve brain function.

“The more social interaction you have, the more connections your brain is making,” Leger said. Socializing with others is a protective factor to reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease. He added that it is as much a stimulator of brain connections as education.

My social connections are vast. Jazz on Sunday and Tuesday nights, Trivia on Thursday.  All are at bars so alcohol is involved. Monthly wine tastings. I'm totally ignoring any condemnation about alcohol from doctors and researchers! 

“When you have a typical conversation, there are a lot of different cognitive domains you may be drawing on, comprehending language, speaking, following a story, and a lot of behavioral aspects, socio-emotional cues that you’re picking up on and responding to,” Bock explained. “Social interactions are also just really good for mood, which is also closely related to cognition.”

If they have pets, they really commit to caring for them.

Leger owns two dogs and two cats. With dogs in particular, “you interact with them socially, you are obligated to take them out every day for a walk, and they force you to interact with other dog owners,” Leger said.

(No pets for me. It would complicate my travels tremendously.)

“You have a responsibility and are maintaining the sense that ‘There’s something that I need to do. I need to feed my dog. I need to make sure that they’re well.’ It’s a bit like parenting, where that sense of purpose is kept.”

These may protect a person’s cognitive function, as they provide daily opportunities for mental stimulation, social interaction and exercise. If you have a pet, this is another great reason to commit to its care.

They steer clear of foods with pesticides, preservatives or that are highly processed.

“It’s not quirky, but I try to stay away from highly processed foods, and try to eat organic food as much as possible. That’s not possible for everybody, but I do believe that pesticides, herbicides and highly processed foods are associated with elements that can stress the brain, that can increase the risk of dementia,” Leger said.

A practical way to do this is to buy fresh produce from the local farmer’s market or community food garden. If not weekly, try to do it once a month. If this isn’t possible, make it a habit to rinse your fruit and vegetables thoroughly with water before consuming them, as Leger does.

They eat lots of olive oil.

Dr. Gustavo Roman, a neurologist at Houston Methodist Hospital, takes a tablespoon’s worth of extra virgin olive oil every morning with his breakfast.

“There are more blood vessels in the brain than in any other organ,” he said. When these blood vessels are affected, this raises the risk of developing dementia.

The Mediterranean diet is linked to healthier blood vessels. As Roman scoured the scientific research, he saw that “there was data that the Mediterranean diet was a factor linked to the decrease in frequency of dementia.” A key component of this diet is incorporating extra virgin olive oil at every meal.

He advises his patients to find a supermarket that allows them to taste test different olive oils to find the one that is most palatable to them. “When they purchase the olive oil,” he said, “it should be from the current year’s harvest, it shouldn’t have a very long shelf life, and its bottle should be black, dark green or brown or metallic because the oil is very sensitive to light.”

A recent study has used artificial intelligence (AI) to reveal the remarkable potential of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Researchers combined AI technology, chemistry, and omics research to identify specific bioactive compounds in EVOO that show promising effects in treating and preventing AD.

The study was published in the latest issue of the journal Aging Cell, and it was titled, “Extra virgin olive oil improves synaptic activity, short‐term plasticity, memory, and neuropathology in a tauopathy model.”

Researchers explained that EVOO is a food that is rich in antioxidants that can benefit health in more than one way. These antioxidants are especially beneficial for the brain and heart. This new study follows their earlier work that shows that EVOO can help restore memory and also protects the brain from damage caused by Alzheimer’s disease. This study was conducted on mice at the time.
In a new study, also conducted on lab mice, reveals that EVOO can benefit another group of dementia-related pathology called tauopathies. An abnormal protein called tau protein can build up within the brain and can lead to dementia and slow the decline in cognitive functions, wrote the researchers. This study reveals that the use of EVOO can help prevent a specific decline of the mental faculties called frontotemporal dementia that is seen with tauopathies.
The team of researchers explained that tauopathies and dementia affects different parts of the brain. Alzheimer’s disease, for example, affects the hippocampus region, which deals with memory. Frontotemporal dementia, on the other hand, affects the frontal lobe and the temporal lobes. These are present at the forehead and sides of the head, respectively. Frontotemporal dementia is usually seen between the ages of 40 and 65 years and there are alterations in personality traits, language, handwriting, behaviors, etc. With time, there is a deterioration of memory and cognitive functions.
One of the senior researchers, Domenico Praticò, MD, Scott Richards North Star Foundation Chair for Alzheimer's Research, Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology and Microbiology, and Director of the Alzheimer's Center at Temple, in his statement said, “EVOO has been a part of the human diet for a very long time and has many benefits for health, for reasons that we do not yet fully understand. The realization that EVOO can protect the brain against different forms of dementia gives us an opportunity to learn more about the mechanisms through which it acts to support brain health.”
For the Alzheimer’s disease study, they had used mice modeled to develop the disease. They fed the mice on EVOO and when their brains were dissected on death, there were no features of brain damage and deposits of the abnormal proteins within their brains. EVOO-fed mice were also found to have normal cognitive functions.
In this new study, they took mice that were genetically engineered (hTau mice) to develop tauopathy or deposits of abnormal protein tau in their brains. The tau usually forms tangles and deposits in various parts of the brain. These tangles cause blockage in the neuron communications and thus impair memory and thinking. In humans, this leads to frontotemporal dementia.
Mice designed to develop tauopathies were then put on a diet of EVOO supplementation from a young age (corresponding to age 30 to 40 years in humans). At six months of age (corresponding to a human age of 60 years) the mice were found to have a 60% reduction in the tau protein deposits in their brains. These mice were also found to have a 60% reduction in the formation of damaging tau deposits in their brains. The synapse functions were better in these mice and they also had higher levels of a protein called complexin-1. This protein is found to be important for maintaining healthy neural connections or synapses. They tested the mice for memory and learning tests and found that the mice fed on EVOO did well on those tests as well.
Our findings demonstrate that EVOO directly improves synaptic activity, short‐term plasticity, and memory while decreasing tau neuropathology in the hTau mice. These results strengthen the healthy benefits of EVOO and further support the therapeutic potential of this natural product not only for AD but also for primary tauopathies.”

They wrote that the results, “provide strong preclinical evidence in support of the novel concept that EVOO should be considered as a potential and viable multi‐targeting agent not only for AD but also for primary tauopathies.”
As a next step, the team plans on using EVOO in older mice and see if it can reverse the signs of cognitive decline and reverse the tau tangles and deposits.

A new mouse study suggests another reason why extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) may improve brain health and decrease risk of cognitive decline. A few caveats apply, as they do with all research of this kind, and we’ll circle back to those in a moment.
As one of the main components of the Mediterranean Diet, EVOO has already earned an impressive health reputation. A wide range of research showing benefits of the Mediterranean Diet points to EVOO as one of its likely brain- and heart-health boosters, with the potential for improving the elasticity of blood vessels and hedging against age-related memory decline. Previous animal research has also pointed to its potential for decreasing risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
The latest study went a step further to find out if an EVOO-enriched diet could fight the build-up of toxic tau proteins that are found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients and those with frontotemporal dementia. Symptoms of this form of dementia, which primarily affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain and can manifest as early as 40, include difficulties with language and eventual deterioration of memory.

Researchers put a group of mice genetically engineered to develop tauopathy (accumulation of tau proteins in their brains) on a diet supplemented with a significant amount of EVOO. All of the mice in this group were relatively young, the equivalent to ages 30-40 in humans. Other mice of the same age were fed a normal diet without EVOO.
When the researchers evaluated the mice six months later, they found a 60% reduction in toxic tau deposits in the brains of the mice fed the EVOO-enriched diet compared to the mice eating a regular diet. The EVOO group also performed better on learning and memory tests.
The researchers reported that the brain tissue of mice in the EVOO group showed especially high levels of a protein called complexin-1, thought to play a role in maintaining the health of neuron synapses – the junction points between brain cells. An increase in this protein may counterbalance the accumulation of tau, but the exact relationship isn’t entirely clear.
“EVOO has been a part of the human diet for a very long time and has many benefits for health, for reasons that we do not yet fully understand,” said the study’s senior investigator Domenico Praticò, MD, in a press statement. “The realization that EVOO can protect the brain against different forms of dementia gives us an opportunity to learn more about the mechanisms through which it acts to support brain health.”
Next, the researchers plan to conduct research into the effects of feeding EVOO to older mice that already have advanced tau deposits in their brains. “We are particularly interested in knowing whether EVOO can reverse tau damage and ultimately treat tauopathy in older mice,” Dr. Praticò added.
While this line of research is promising (along with the list of EVOO studies leading up to the latest), a few limitations apply. Mouse research can point to important directions for human research, but it’s not the same as human research and does not demonstrate a cause-and-effect relationship between EVOO and brain-health benefits for humans. The positive results found in this and related studies suggest potential benefits, but they are not “proof” of anything.
Along with that limitation, it’s also important to note that the accumulation of tau in the human brain typically occurs over many years, for reasons we’re only starting to understand. The mice in this and related studies have been genetically altered to develop a similar condition in a matter of months. While this acceleration provides a useful model for research, it’s not nearly the same as what happens in humans over the course of decades.
Having said that, these results add to a body of findings suggesting that EVOO has the potential for improving both brain and heart health. As part of the Mediterranean Diet, which boasts a variety of possible benefits, this ancient oil has earned the attention it’s getting.
The study was published in the journal Aging Cell.
