What this blog is for:

My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

Attention Deficit Drugs Don’t Raise Adults’ Heart Risk in Study

Drugs to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder didn’t raise the risk of heart attacks, stroke or sudden cardiac death in adults, a study found.

The report, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, follows a similar review published last month that found no increased risk in children. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration urged pharmaceutical companies to warn parents and patients about the potential danger in 2006 after reports that the medicines could increase cardiovascular risks in children.

While drugs such as Shire Plc’s Adderall, Novartis AG’s Ritalin and Johnson & Johnson’s Concerta are often considered childhood medications, nearly one-third of all pills taken for the condition known as ADHD are used by adults. Pills used to treat attention deficit can raise blood pressure and heart rate, which theoretically could contribute to heart complications.

“Current or new use of ADHD medications identified from filled prescriptions, compared with nonuse or remote use, was not associated with an increased risk of serious cardiovascular events,” said the researchers, led by Laurel A. Habel, from Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland. “We also found little support for an increased risk for any specific medication or with longer duration of current use,” the researchers concluded in the study.

Investigators compared rates of heart attack, **stroke**, and sudden death in patients taking ADHD medications with matched controls not taking medications over a median of 609 days. Overall, there were 28 deaths...

Methylphenidate(Ritalin) and stroke rehab

Methylphenidate is used as part of a treatment program to control symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; more difficulty focusing, controlling actions, and remaining still or quiet than other people who are the same age) in adults and children.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the efficacy and safety of methylphenidate in acute stroke rehabilitation.

DESIGN:

A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

PATIENTS AND SETTING:

Twenty-one stroke patients consecutively admitted to a community-based rehabilitation unit.

INTERVENTION:

Three-week treatment of methylphenidate (or placebo) in conjunction with physical therapy. Methylphenidate was started at 5mg and increased gradually to 30mg (15mg at 8:00AM and 15mg at 12:00 noon), and discontinued before discharge.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:

Mood measures included the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (ZDS). Cognitive status was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE). Motor functioning was assessed using the Fugl-Meyer Scale (FMS) and a modified version of the Functional Independence Measure (M-FIM). All measures were administered pretreatment and weekly thereafter. Side effects were measured after each increase in dosage and weekly.

RESULTS:

Patients receiving methylphenidate treatment scored lower on the HAM-D (F(1,18)=5.714, p=.028), lower on the ZDS (F(1,18)=4.206, p=.055), higher on the M-FIM (F(1,18)=5.374, p=.032), and higher on the FMS (F(1,9)=4.060, p=.075) than patients receiving placebo.

CONCLUSION:

Methylphenidate appears to be a safe and effective intervention in early poststroke rehabilitation that may expedite recovery.
