My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

REVEAL: CETP inhibitor added to statin lowers incidence of major coronary events

Would this help reduce the incidence of stroke also?  Since this didn't seem to be one of the endpoints your doctor will never take a chance on giving it to you for that reason. SOMEONE ELSE WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM?

Incidence of major coronary events was significantly reduced among patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease who received statin therapy with the addition of the cholesterol ester transfer protein inhibitor anacetrapib, according to data presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress.
The findings, which compared statin therapy plus anacetrapib (Merck) to statin therapy plus placebo, were simultaneously published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Merck stated in a press release that it is “reviewing the results of the trial with external experts and will consider whether to file new drug applications with the [FDA] and other regulatory agencies.”
“Pharmacological inhibition of cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) can produce substantial increases in HDL cholesterol levels, along with reductions in levels of non-HDL cholesterol,” Louise Bowman, MD, FRCP, associate professor at the Clinical Trial Service Unit of the University of Oxford and colleagues wrote in the study. “However, previous randomized clinical outcomes trials of CETP inhibitor therapy were stopped after approximately 2 years of follow-up because of either hazards associated with the therapy or an apparent lack of efficacy.”
Researchers conducted the double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 REVEAL trial to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of anacetrapib in patients with preexisting atherosclerotic vascular disease who were receiving effective therapy with atorvastatin and had a mean LDL cholesterol level of 61 mg/dL, a mean non-HDL cholesterol level of 92 mg/dL and a mean HDL cholesterol level of 40 mg/dL.
A total of 30,449 patients were assigned to receive 100 mg of anacetrapib once daily or matching placebo.
The prespecified primary outcome of the study was the first major coronary event, a composite of coronary death, MI or coronary revascularization. Median follow-up was 4.1 years.
The occurrence of the primary outcome was significantly less frequent among patients in the anacetrapib group compared with the placebo group (10.8% vs. 11.8%; RR = 0.91; 95% CI, 0.85-0.97), Bowman and colleagues found.
Relative difference in risk was consistent across multiple prespecified groups, according to the researchers.
The mean HDL level was higher at by 43 mg/dL and the mean level of non-HDL was lower by 17 mg/dL in the anacetrapib group compared with the placebo group.
The groups did not differ in risk for death, cancer, or other adverse events, according to the researchers.
“During a median of 4 years of follow-up, anacetrapib treatment was not associated with any of the previously hypothesized adverse effects of very low levels of cholesterol (eg, reduced cognitive function, increased cancer incidence or nonvascular death),” the researchers wrote. “We found that the addition of CETP inhibitor anacetrapib to intensive statin treatment in patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease resulted in a significantly lower incidence of major coronary events than the addition of placebo during 4 years of treatment.”

Dark chocolate with olive oil associated with improved cardiovascular risk profile

Dark chocolate enriched with extra virgin olive oil is associated with an improved cardiovascular risk profile, according to research presented today at ESC Congress.
"A healthy diet is known to reduce the risk of ," said lead author Dr Rossella Di Stefano, a cardiologist at the University of Pisa, Italy. "Fruits and vegetables exert their protective effects through plant polyphenols, which are found in cocoa, olive oil, and apples. Research has found that the Italian Panaia red apple has very high levels of polyphenols and antioxidants."
This study tested the association between consumption of dark chocolate enriched with olive oil or Panaia red apple (table 1) with atherosclerosis progression in healthy individuals with factors.
The randomised crossover study included 26 volunteers (14 men, 12 women) with at least three (smoking, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, or family history of cardiovascular disease) who received 40 grams of dark chocolate daily for 28 days. For 14 consecutive days it contained 10 percent extra virgin olive oil and for 14 consecutive days it contained 2.5 percent Panaia red apple. The two types of chocolate were given in random order.
Progression of atherosclerosis was assessed by metabolic changes (levels of carnitine and hippurate), lipid profile, and levels of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). EPCs are critical for vascular repair and maintenance of endothelial function.
Urine and blood samples were collected at baseline and after the intervention. Urine samples were analysed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for endogenous metabolites. Circulating EPC levels were assessed with flow cytometry. Smoking status, body mass index, blood pressure, glycaemia and lipid profile were also monitored.
After 28 days, the researchers found that the chocolate enriched with olive oil was associated with significantly increased EPC levels and decreased carnitine and hippurate levels compared to both baseline and after consumption of apple-enriched chocolate. Olive oil-enriched chocolate was associated with significantly increased high-density lipoprotein ("good") cholesterol and decreased blood pressure compared to baseline. There was a non-significant decrease in triglyceride levels with apple-enriched chocolate.
Dr Di Stefano said: "We found that small daily portions of with added natural polyphenols from extra virgin olive oil was associated with an improved cardiovascular risk profile. Our study suggests that extra might be a good food additive to help preserve our 'repairing cells,' the EPC."

On World Stroke Day New ESC Stroke Council Urges Better Blood Pressure Monitoring

The real tragedy is that massive amounts of disability could be prevented if the stroke medical world would acknowledge that stroke is a total failure and work to stop the neuronal cascade of death by these 5 causes. But that will never occur with our fucking failures of stroke associations.

he European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and its newly created Council on Stroke (Ask how to join)says World Stroke Day should be a wake-up call for people everywhere. Each year 6.5 million people die from stroke and another 10 million are permanently disabled.
“The real tragedy is that most of these cases are preventable,” said Professor Petr Widimsky, chairman of the ESC Council on Stroke. “People need to check their blood pressure levels, and if they're high, to get them lower with diet and exercise or medication. Doctors have a variety of safe and effective treatments. But it all starts by knowing your levels.”
Studies show that only 50% of people get their blood pressure checked each year and only 30% maintain a healthy level of 140/90 or less.
The European Society of Cardiology is the preeminent science organization advancing all aspects of cardiovascular medicine. Professor Lina Badimon, ESC Vice President for Scientific Affairs, said the new Council on Stroke should make a meaningful contribution in the fight against this disease.
“By working together with other experts -neurologists, vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, epidemiologists and others - the ESC Council on Stroke aims at improving stroke awareness and prevention,” said Prof. Badimon. “The Council is also working to optimise strategies for the acute management of stroke, mapping the current situation in Europe and launching a Pan-European initiative in the field of acute stroke.”

European Society of Cardiology kicked off its 5-day meeting

And with 32,000 attendees and all that supposed brainpower I bet they have no stroke survivor talking to them, telling them they know jackshit about where stroke research and rehab should be going. No planning/no strategy means absolutely no progress being made. That coming tsunami of strokes will roll right over them, killing them and us in the process.
