It’s all about fiber, folks. According to Dr. Smith, fiber is a massive driver of good bacteria in the gut, and most Americans get way too little of it. The best way to get more fiber is to eat foods that are grown from the ground. This includes everything from nuts and seeds to lentils and popcorn, to, of course, vegetables and fruits. Berries are an incredibly fiber-rich food source, especially raspberries, blackberries, and wild blueberries.4 Plus, some berries (like blueberries) have also been shown to reduce cortisol, a stress hormone that can negatively affect your mood.

In one study that subjected volunteers to a stressful task, those who took the vitamin fared better on measurements of stress than those who received a placebo. The vitamin had a subjective effect on participants (subjects reported feeling better), and it also worked on the cardiovascular (heart) and neuroendocrine (brain and hormones) systems.6

"Start your day with an orange at breakfast or have one as a tasty afternoon snack paired with almonds or yogurt," Bauer recommends. Steel-Cut Oats

A warm bowl of oatmeal has many health benefits. It delivers a solid dose of tryptophan, helping the body produce serotonin.11 “All types of oats are terrific, but I'm a fan of steel-cut in particular because they're minimally processed, which results in a slower increase in blood sugar and helps stabilize your mood," Bauer says.12 Oats also contain magnesium; people who are deficient in this essential mineral may be more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.13 Magnesium has a large impact on our stress levels and sleep, helping to regulate a particular neurotransmitter that calms the mind. It’s also responsible for activating the benefits of vitamin D in the body. 

Steel-cut oats take longer to cook than quick-cooking oats. Two shortcuts: Use a slow cooker to whip up an overnight version, or prepare steel-cut oats in advance (on the stovetop or using the slow-cooker method), and freeze individual 1-cup portions. When you wake up, just pop a container out of the freezer, microwave it (you may need to add a splash of water or milk to thin it out), and enjoy it like regular oatmeal. Focus on Plant-Based Foods for Stress Relief

When it comes to stress-relieving foods, here's the bottom line: Eat a variety of mostly plant-based foods, and your gut health—and by extension your mental health—will be on its way to better shape. The simple act of observing others cope with a traumatic experience can increase our capacity for resilience and prevent the pathological states that can result from it, notably depression. Neuroscientists at UNIL have demonstrated the presence of this “emotional contagion” in mice, and successfully deciphered its mechanism. 

The neurotransmitter serotonin, released in a brain structure called the habenula, has been shown to be the key to resilience. 

This discovery, published in Science, revisits the role of serotonin and opens up new perspectives, notably for understanding depression and its treatment.

Human beings have the ability to cope with aversive experiences while continuing to live a normal life. This ability is known as resilience. However, some individuals are more vulnerable to traumatic events. They develop a loss of motivation and drive, which are hallmarks of depression.

Promoting resilience in such people at risk could counter their vulnerability and function as a preventive practice against the possible emergence of a pathological state. But there are still too many unknowns for resilience to be used as a preventive practice.

“There is a lack of clinical tools or underlying mechanisms to promote this type of conditioning capable of fostering a resilient reaction as in healthy people”, says Manuel Mameli, Associate Professor at the Department of Fundamental Neurosciences at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine, University of Lausanne (UNIL).

To achieve this, we need to understand the brain function behind adversity – a challenge that Manuel Mameli’s team has successfully undertaken.

Observing for self-preservation

To explore the underlying brain mechanisms, the UNIL neuroscientists first designed an experimental model capable of promoting resilience and measuring its consequences on the appearance of pathological traits following trauma.

“We started from the recognized fact that simply observing the emotional experiences of others helps us to learn from them. It’s a phenomenon known as emotional contagion, and it engages resilience”, explains Manuel Mameli. 

To achieve this, an “observer” mouse was placed close to a mouse subjected to small electric shocks to the paws. This simple task protected the majority of the observer mice from developing pathological states of depression when they were subsequently exposed to this unpleasant experience themselves. This was not the case for mice who had not witnessed the traumatic experiences of their fellow companions.

The scientists concluded that the simple act of observing others cope with a traumatic experience increases one’s own capacity for resilience and helps guard against possible pathological consequences.

Serotonin, the resilience molecule

Following the discovery of this behavioral principle, the neuroscientists successfully identified the brain mechanism mediating it. They focused on the habenula, a tiny cerebral structure located at the heart of the brain, known to participate in emotional and sensory processing, and to regulate neurotransmitters associated with depression, notably serotonin. To achieve this, they specifically developed imaging tools to track this molecule in mice.

“It is very difficult to measure the variation of serotonin in the brain. Thanks to a biosensor developed by Yulong Li of Peking University, co-author of the study, we were able to identify the key mechanism”, adds Manuel Mameli.

Recordings made during behavioral experiments revealed that emotional contagion coincided with a lasting change in the functioning of neurons in the habenula, together with an increase in serotonin release in this region.

More specifically, according to Sarah Mondoloni, postdoctoral fellow in Manuel Mameli’s laboratory at UNIL and first investigator of the study, “it is the dynamics of serotonin that change during this task, and this is the key finding of our study”.

By artificially altering the dynamics of serotonin levels, the research team was able to demonstrate that its non-increase not only undermines the long-lasting neuronal activity change in the habenula, but also the ability of mice to foster resilience following adversity. 

Re-exploring the mechanisms of depression

A common denominator between the mechanism of resilience after adversity discovered in this study and that of depression is serotonin. Many antidepressants target serotonin to increase its concentration in the brain. Here, neuroscientists show that a transient, localized increase in the habenula can prevent the onset of apathetic behavior following a traumatic experience.

“This property of the serotonergic system is an exciting information for neuroscientists. But our discovery could also pave the way for new therapeutic applications relevant to depression, for example by testing existing pharmacological serotonin activators, including psychedelic therapies that stimulate the serotonin system. Their use could be refined to achieve better therapeutic approaches”, concludes Manuel Mameli.

Pre-Alzheimer's Memory Problems Linked to Loss of Serotonin

People with fewer happy chemicals in their brain might be at greater risk of neurodegeneration from Alzheimer's disease, according to new research.

Of people with mild cognitive impairment, those with lower levels of serotonin—a neurotransmitter associated with positive mood, appetite and sleep—were found to have increased memory problems, the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, a peer-review journal, published.

The study therefore revealed that participants who already had mild cognitive impairment (MCI) had already lost brain structures that transported serotonin.

Newsweek has reached out to the authors of the study for comment via email.

Alzheimer's disease degenerates the brain, eventually leading to the development of dementia. The disease is associated with the build-up of several proteins called amyloid and tau, which clump up into plaques and tangles, and affect the brain's functions. Around 5.8 million adults live with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

MCI is the stage before Alzheimer's fully kicks in, and is associated with forgetfulness, loss of sense of smell, and struggling to remember words. MCI may not always lead to full-blown Alzheimer's, but is often a precursor stage, meaning that it is an important stage for early interventions.

"The study shows that people with mild cognitive impairment already display loss of the serotonin transporter. This measure that reflects serotonin degeneration is associated with problems with memory, even when we take into account in our statistical model MRI measures of neurodegeneration and PET measures of the amyloid protein that are associated with Alzheimer's Disease," Gwenn Smith, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, said in a statement published Thursday.

However, the authors stress that these results only show a correlation between lower serotonin transporter levels and memory problems in MCI, which does not necessarily mean that serotonin or lack thereof plays a role in the progression of MCI to Alzheimer's.

In the study, the authors performed positron emission tomography (PET) scans on the brains of over 90 adults with and without mild cognitive impairment between 2009 and 2022, looking at serotonin transporter levels and the amount of amyloid-beta protein (Aβ) in the brain. Amyloid is one of the protein structures that build up in the brain and cause dementia.

They found that patients with MCI had up to 25 percent lower levels of serotonin transporters in some regions of the brain, specifically those involved in executive function, emotion, and memory. They also had higher amyloid levels than the control group.

"The correlation we observed between lower serotonin transporters and memory problems in MCI is important because we may have identified a brain chemical that we can safely target that may improve cognitive deficits and, potentially, depressive symptoms," Smith said.

The researchers hope that they can further investigate how serotonin is linked to Alzheimer's in the hope that it could be targeted in the treatment of the disease.

"If we can show that serotonin loss over time is directly involved in the transition from MCI to AD, recently developed antidepressant medications may be an effective way to improve memory deficits and depressive symptoms and thus, may be a powerful way forward to slow disease progression," Smith added.
