My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

How to Use Canned Beets to Improve Athletic Performance

Not to be done on your own until your doctor prescribes this in 50 years.  After my next stroke I'm going to demand beets for the extra oxygen it can deliver. I don't care if it hasn't been clinically proven. We'll be dead before something as simple as this is clinically proven.

Vegetable nitrates, concentrated in green leafy vegetables and beets, underwent a great makeover a few years ago. They went from being understood as inert substances to having a profound effect on the power plants within our cells, reducing the oxygen cost during exercise. This means they can allow us to bust out the same amount of work with less oxygen. One little shot of beet juice allowed free divers to hold their breath for more than four minutes, or about a half-minute longer than usual. For others, improved muscle efficiency allowed athletes to exercise at a higher power output or running speed for the same amount of breath. I profiled this fascinating discovery in an unprecedented 17-part video series (see below), the longest I think I’ve ever done. That was back in 2012, but what does the new science say? That’s what I cover in my video, Whole Beets vs. Juice for Improving Athletic Performance.
Most of the studies were done on men, but it works on women, too, including African-American women who are an even more neglected research demographic. Drinking beet juice results in the same workload power outputs using significantly less oxygen. But what about whole beets? They are cheaper, healthier, and found in any produce aisle, but there had never been studies on actual beets… until now.
Whole beetroot consumption acutely improves running performance. They gave physically fit men and women a cup and a half of baked beets, which is equal to about a can of beets, 75 minutes before running a 5K. They started out the same, but during the last mile of the 5K race, the beet group pulled ahead compared to the placebo group, who were given berries instead. Though the beet group participants were running faster, their heart rate wasn’t any higher. If anything, they reported less exertion.
Faster time with less effort? They don’t call them block-rocking beets for nothing! :)
If nitrates are so good, then why not just take them in a pill? Although dietary nitrate supplements can work, their long-term safety is questionable. Non-vegetable sources of nitrates may have detrimental health effects, so if we want to improve our performance, we should ideally obtain nitrates from whole vegetables. The industry knows this, so instead it markets an array of nitric oxide-stimulating supplements. However, there is little or no evidence of a performance improvement following supplementation with these so-called NO boosters. The evidence is with the vegetables.
How much money can companies make selling beets, though? How about a novel beetroot-enriched bread product? We’ve tried to get people to eat their fruits and vegetables, and where has that gotten us? But, hey! Lots of people eat white bread, so why not have them eat red bread? And indeed it worked: red beet bread brought down blood pressures and improved the ability of arteries to relax and dilate naturally. Bread, therefore, may be an effective vehicle to increase vegetable consumption without significant dietary changes,” because heavens forbid people should have to change their diet to improve their health…

Beetroot juice may provide benefits to heart disease patients

I'm doing about 3-4 oz. of pickled beets daily but have no clue how much good it is doing. You might be able to add this to your diet stroke protocol in a couple hundred years.

Nitrate supplementation decreases sympathetic nerve responses that contribute to disease risk.
A new study finds that dietary nitrate – a compound that dilates blood vessels to decrease blood pressure – may reduce overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system that occurs with heart disease. The research team looked specifically at beetroot juice, a source of dietary nitrate, to explore its use as a future targeted treatment option for people with cardiovascular disease. The study is the first to study the effects of nitrate supplementation on sympathetic nerve activity.

Activation of the sympathetic nervous system results in elevated heart rate and blood pressure and blood vessel constriction. Sympathetic outflow also increases with some forms of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure and heart failure. The aim of the study was to show that “acute nitrate supplementation using beetroot juice can decrease muscle sympathetic outflow at rest and during exercise,” the Canadian research team wrote.

Twenty young adult volunteers (average age: 27) participated in two separate testing visits in which they blindly received either a nitrate supplement or a placebo. On both visits, the research team recorded the blood pressure, heart rate and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and measured muscle activity at rest and during handgrip exercise with the participants’ non–dominant hand. Measurements were recorded at the beginning of the visit and then again after the volunteers drank nitrate–rich beetroot juice or a placebo and had rested on their backs for three hours.

MSNA burst rate, denoting the frequency of nerve activity, was lower when the volunteers drank beetroot juice compared to when they drank the placebo. Sympathetic nerve activity also decreased during exercise. “Surprisingly, no differences in blood pressure were detected at rest or during exercise,” the research team noted. “These results provide proof–of–concept that dietary nitrate supplementation can modulate central sympathetic outflow and suggest that the established cardiovascular benefits of dietary nitrate are likely to involve a neural contribution.”

The article, “Acute beetroot juice supplementation on sympathetic nerve activity: A randomized, double–blind, placebo–controlled proof–of–concept study,” was published ahead of print in the American Journal of Physiology–Heart and Circulatory Physiology.

Summer is coming to a close, which means school and work are ramping up again - and you want your brain to be in tip top shape to tackle important tasks and projects. Did you know that there are specific foods you can incorporate into your diet to increase your cognitive abilities such as focus, memory, problem solving skills and learning?
Research has shown that certain nutrients can enhance brain function by increasing blood flow to the brain, calming inflammation and battling fatigue.
Here are my top six brain boosting foods to keep you sharp, focused and on point.
1. Beets: These beautiful root vegetables have tremendous brain boosting potential because of the natural nitrates they contain. Some studies show that these nitrates increase blood flow to the brain, enhancing mental performance. My favorite way to eat beets is to roast (you lose much fewer nutrients this way than by boiling) and drizzle them with some extra virgin olive oil, Icelandic flake salt and fresh ground pepper.
2. Almonds: Nutritional powerhouses, almonds are high in Vitamin E, heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fats, fiber and protein. Vitamin E has been shown to help reduce the risk of cognitive impairment and potentially even the decline caused by Alzheimer’s. An easy way to eat almonds is to pre-portion them out (one small handful is the ideal serving size) and keep them in your car, desk and bag for a healthy snack or to swap out peanut butter for almond butter.
3. Celery: Fibrous, crunchy celery is a great source of luteolin, a plant compound that might lower rates of age-related memory loss. Luteolin calms inflammation and prevents degeneration by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines in the brain. Celery is an easy food to snack on, and for an added brain boost, you can add almond butter and goji berries to it - like a grown up version of bugs on a log.

4. Sardines: People either love or hate these little fishes but it’s undeniable that they are a super food: full of essential fatty acids (EFAs), calcium and protein, sardines are one of the best foods you can possibly consume. The EFAs they contain are EPA and DHA, omega-3 fatty acids that act to bolster communication among brain cells and assist in modulating neurotransmitters responsible for mental focus as well as calming inflammation in the brain. EPA and DHA also increase brain levels of the ‘good mood’ chemical, serotonin. Bonus: the mercury content in sardines is one of the lowest in any fish.
5. Dark chocolate: The key here is choosing good quality chocolate that has 70% or more cacao content. The flavonols in dark chocolate improve blood vessel function, and thus increase brain blood flow. This can enhance memory, cognitive function and alertness. Dark chocolate also boasts brain stimulating caffeine and theobromine, which can help with short term cognitive functioning.
6. Green Tea: Polyphenols in green tea are thought to be neuroprotective and are being studied as therapeutic agents with the potential to alter brain aging processes. Green tea contains caffeine, though only about a third of the amount in a cup of coffee, which can also provide a short term mental boost. My favorite way to increase my intake of green tea is by eating these natural mints that contain one cup of green tea in three mints.

DASH diet effective for BP reduction

As far as I am concerned the DASH diet  doesn't give enough specificity. But that is just my uninformed opinion. I would prefer a diet based upon eating nitric oxide creating foods. How many beets do I need to eat for x reduction in blood pressure? Or Kale? Or spinach?

While many dietary interventions are associated with reductions in BP, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet may product the greatest decline, according to new research published in Hypertension.

Researchers performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of 24 randomized controlled trials covering 23,858 participants that were conducted between January 1990 and March 2015. Their goal was to measure the combined effects of dietary interventions on BP and to determine whether effectiveness varied among the different approaches.
The median age of participants was 45 years. Only 10 studies reported information on race/ethnicity; in those studies, the majority of patients were white.
The combined net effect of dietary intervention on systolic BP and diastolic BP was –3.07 mm Hg (95% CI, –3.85 to–2.30) and –1.81 mm Hg (95% CI, –2.24 to –1.38), respectively. The largest net reduction of –7.62 mm Hg (95% CI, –9.95 to –5.29) for systolic BP and –4.22 mm Hg (95% CI, –5.87 to –2.57) for diastolic BP was observed with the DASH diet.
Other dietary approaches, including low-sodium, low-sodium/high-potassium, low-sodium/low-calorie and low-calorie diets, also produced significant reductions in systolic and diastolic BP. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet, however, was associated with reduced diastolic BP (–1.44 mm Hg [95% CI, –2.11 to –0.76]), but not systolic BP.
In subgroup analyses, those participants with pre-existing hypertension experienced larger net reductions in systolic BP (P = .03) and diastolic BP (P = .02) compared with participants with normal BP. Greater reductions in both net systolic BP (P = .01) and diastolic BP (P = .008) were also observed among participants who were not taking antihypertensive medications compared with those prescribed antihypertensive medications. Another difference of note was smaller net effects observed in groups with follow-up longer than 24 months and in larger-sized trials, according to the researchers. The largest BP reductions were observed in trials that included fewer than 100 participants.
Although the reductions in BP may seem small, “the pooled results were incremental BP reductions experienced by those groups adopting dietary interventions [and] even relatively small reductions in BP can dramatically reduce the incidence of CVD and mortality,” the researchers wrote.
They concluded that while all dietary interventions reduced BP, some, like the DASH diet, were more effective than the others, and suggested that certain approaches should be targeted for specific populations.

Dietary Nitrate Lowers Blood Pressure: Epidemiological, Pre-clinical Experimental and Clinical Trial Evidence

My last visit with my doctor had me asking about a nitric oxide diet. She said her clinic did not have one, diabetes, weight, gluten free were there. This abstract tells you nothing so ask your doctor for such a diet. I use beets but have no idea how much I should be eating on a daily basis.

Abstract

Nitric oxide (NO), a potent vasodilator critical in maintaining vascular homeostasis, can reduce blood pressure in vivo. Loss of constitutive NO generation, for example as a result of endothelial dysfunction, occurs in many pathological conditions, including hypertension, and contributes to disease pathology. Attempts to therapeutically deliver NO via organic nitrates (e.g. glyceryl trinitrate, GTN) to reduce blood pressure in hypertensives have been largely unsuccessful. However, in recent years inorganic (or 'dietary') nitrate has been identified as a potential solution for NO delivery through its sequential chemical reduction via the enterosalivary circuit. With dietary nitrate found in abundance in vegetables this review discusses epidemiological, pre-clinical and clinical data supporting the idea that dietary nitrate could represent a cheap and effective dietary intervention capable of reducing blood pressure and thereby improving cardiovascular health.

My supplement and diet regime

Do not follow this. There is no clinical proof that any of this works. There is initial research that I refer to but since we have NO leadership and NO strategy we will never find out what we should be eating post-stroke. Right now there is no way to easily measure if the endpoints of all this are working as expected.

8 Produce Picks For Better Blood Pressure

This is actually an excellent article, it has the references to the recommendations attached. Now if only our fucking failures of stroke associations put this together into an easily understandable stroke diet protocol.  But they won't, you'll have to guess at the amounts to eat per lb. of your weight. Pharma will not research this since it doesn't contain any drugs that can be patented.

I'm already doing beets and since I'm getting a wrist blood pressure monitor I should be able to tell what works for me. Don't do anything with this since this is not doctor approved.
