My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

DLSU student develops robotic arm for stroke rehab 
An engineering student from De La Salle University (DLSU) has developed a wearable robotic arm that can be used in the therapy of stroke and accident victims.
Paul Dominique Baniqued told ANC's Future Perfect Tech Shorts that he saw the need for a bio-robotic device while visiting hospitals during his stint selling lab equipment.
He saw long lines of patients waiting for therapists and thought that he could come up with a way to help these patients.
Baniqued said he was also inspired by science fiction movies like Iron Man and Elysium which featured high-tech exoskeletons.
"For my research, I would like something that helps people and at the same time at least be cool to show," Baniqued said.
He is one of 25 Filipinos who received grants from the British Council's Newton Agham Programme, which aims to develop science and innovation in the Philippines.
Baniqued will pursue advanced studies in the United Kingdom where he hopes to further develop his expertise in bio-robotics.

Glasgow student creates rehabilitation device to help stroke survivors

A product design and innovation student has created a low-cost rehabilitation device to help stroke survivors regain the use of their arm.

University of Strathclyde student Kirstin Lamotte, came up with the pioneering design as part of this year's Young Innovators Challenge.
The Government-funded scheme sees 15 finalists awarded up to £2000 each to fund development of their business ideas which aim to tackle health, social and environmental issues.

Product Design and Innovation student Kirstin, 23, said: "I came up with the idea due to my dad having a stroke two years ago.
"The hospital was good at getting him back on his feet and living independently, but getting the strength back in his arm was a particular challenge.
"There is technology available to help with this but it’s very expensive."
The aim of the device is to regain, teach and exercise gross arm movements.
Attached to a tabletop, the unit works in a similar way to sliding a rowing machine seat but with a handle attached and smaller scale for your arm.
Compared to similar products being sold for around £6000, Kirstin's device is expected to sell for around £200.

The Dana Foundation is asking U.S. high school students to submit their most creative brain experiment ideas to the fourth annual Design a Brain Experiment Competition. Submissions must test an idea about the brain, anything from examining the effects of art on the adolescent brain to exploring alternative treatments for Alzheimer's disease. Students should not complete their experiments, so be creative!

Student Start-Up Company Develops Stroke Rehab App for iPad

Lets just let students work on stroke rehab, they haven't been conditioned yet that its impossible to get stroke rehab functioning as a business model.

Students at four universities in Canada developed an iPad application and started a company to help stroke survivors perform rehabilitation exercises at home. StrokeLink, the name of the company and the app, was part of the 2012 Next 36 program, a Canadian entrepreneurial accelerator for start-ups founded by undergraduates.
The StrokeLink app offers stroke patients an interactive multimedia rehabilitation program they can follow any time of the day at home. The program uses photos, videos, text, and audio descriptions of exercises that engage and guide stroke patients. The program also lets patients set achievement goals for rehabilitation, lifestyle changes, and independence, as well as measures daily progress toward those goals.
Morgan Moe (pictured right), one of the company’s founders and current chief information officer, received a bachelors degree this year from University of Calgary in kinesiology while developing the app and founding the company. Moe is also a licensed emergency medical technician in Calgary.
“Following a stroke, there are so many barriers and challenges that patients and their families face that we want to create a one-stop information hub,” says Moe. “Our hope is that everyone who suffers a stroke will download and use StrokeLink as they leave the hospital and get the information and tools they need to help them on their road to recovery.”
StrokeLink’s founders were selected to took part in the 2012 class of The Next 36, a competitive, 16-week accelerator program for start-up Canadian companies founded by undergraduates and developing mobile Web applications. The Next 36 provides intense business training and mentorship, as well as up to $80,000 in seed funding.

Clinicians needed to test new iPAD app with stroke patients

Morgan Moe is a Kinesiology graduate from Calgary AB who has also been a long-time volunteer, practicum student, and employee at the Association for the Rehabilitation of the Brain Injured (arbi.ca). It was through her work there that an idea first sparked her interest: “I wanted to create an app that would empower patients with better resources to be more engaged in rehabilitation, even from the comfort of their own homes.” It was shortly thereafter that Morgan was accepted into a prestigious entrepreneurship program called The Next 36 (thenext36.ca). This program selects 36 top undergraduates from across Canada and provides seed funding, incredible mentorship and MBA-level education for an entrepreneurial venture.
Through The Next 36, Morgan was teamed up with Simon Jalbert, Commerce graduate from Saint-Mary’s University, Anne-Marie Paquette, Architecture graduate from McGill, and Ben Docksteader, a Computer Science student from PEI. Together the team has worked diligently to pursue their mission of empowering stroke patients and caregivers. Morgan explains, “Alone this would have never been possible. The Next 36 has provided us with a phenomenal opportunity to blend a variety of individual strengths to create a truly transformative piece of technology that can have a tremendous impact on people’s lives.“
StrokePAD is a tablet application designed for patient use, which provides support in navigating care options, individualized health reference materials to prevent a secondary stroke, and personalized rehabilitation programs. The application connects with a web portal through which professionals can design, deliver, remotely change, and monitor rehabilitation programs.
The StrokePAD team is currently looking for healthcare professionals to get involved, institutions to trial the app with their patients, and academic partners looking for research opportunities. All interested individuals are encouraged to contact Morgan at morgan@strokepad.ca
