This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

Scientists may have discovered how to reverse chronic inflammation

A newly identified hormone could hold the secret to slowing biological aging—and making cancer treatments far more effective.

Inflammaging is a chronic, low-grade inflammation that develops throughout the body with age. It’s been linked to many leading causes of illness and death, like cancer, metabolic conditions, and cardiac and neurodegenerative diseases. However pervasive, scientists have struggled to fully understand what causes the inflammation—and, perhaps more importantly, how to reverse its impact.

A new study from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communications identified the thymus, a small organ involved in immune system development, as a key player in inflammaging.

The thymus is located just behind the breastbone and produces a key hormone called thymulin, which regulates inflammation. With age, thymulin decreases while inflammation increases, allowing diseases like cancer to progress.

The scientists at USC found that by increasing thymulin levels in mice, their rates of cancer survival improved and it even made immunotherapy treatments more effective.

“This is the first evidence of a substance that is naturally produced in the thymus, declines with age, and has the power to reverse age-related inflammation,” said Fumito Ito, professor of surgery and immunology and immune therapeutics at the Keck School of Medicine and lead author of the study, in a statement.

 Past studies have already suggested a link between the thymus and chronic inflammation, but these researchers went further, finding the biological mechanism potentially responsible for the process. The study relied, in part, on an uncommon research method: heterochronic parabiosis. This approach requires researchers to surgically join an older mouse to a younger one, so they share blood flow. 

They found that the procedure reduced inflammation in the older mice—suggesting that parts of the younger blood may help reverse age-related decline.

The researchers looked at both human blood samples and mouse models, analyzing the genes involved with both aging and longevity. They found a shortlist linked to cytokines—small protein messengers that regulate inflammation—and found a surprising pattern: Mice that did not have these genes had problems with the thymus.

They found that thymulin is important in the body’s regulation of cytokines—seeing that, additionally, cytokines increase as thymulin levels fall with age.

Although the thymus is best known for producing the T-cells responsible for the immune system’s defense against infections, the findings show it can also account for age-related inflammation.

Looking at older mice with cancer, they found that when thymulin was added, the immune response against tumors was boosted, improving overall survival.

Future implications

These findings raise new questions about the hormone’s role in age-related diseases. Inflammaging is linked to a long list of conditions, including diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. Ito said in the statement that the research team plans to further investigate the role of thymulin in chronic diseases.

Currently, there are many treatments available that are marketed as anti-inflammatory and anti-aging options—but these focus on suppressing the inflammatory pathways or getting rid of aging cells. The potential treatment that Ito and team are creating is different, he told Inc.

Their possible treatment involves “restoring an age-related endocrine signal that normally helps maintain immune homeostasis,” Ito says. “Rather than broadly suppressing inflammation, our findings suggest that thymulin may help restore a physiological regulatory mechanism that is progressively lost during aging.”

An organ once thought to become unimportant after childhood could actually be key to longer life, according to new research.

The thymus is a small organ located behind the sternum and is known to play a central role in the immune system. It acts as a training ground for the immune system’s T cells, which help the body recognise and fight infections.

It’s generally believed to become largely inactive after puberty as it shrinks with age and produces fewer new T cells. As a result, scientists say, its role in adult health remains less studied.

A new study at Mass General Brigham challenges the theory that the thymus grows unimportant after childhood.

Clinicians used artificial intelligence to review CT X-ray scans and found that adults with healthier thymus tended to live longer, with lower risks of heart disease and cancer.

Another study shows that the health of the thymus affects how well cancer patients respond to a key treatment.

“The thymus has been overlooked for decades and may be a missing piece in explaining why people age differently and why cancer treatments fail in some patients,” Hugo Aerts, an author of one of the two studies published in the journal Nature, said. “Our findings suggest thymic health deserves much more attention and may open new avenues for understanding how to protect the immune system as we age.”

One of the studies analysed data from over 25,000 adults who were part of a national lung cancer screening programme and over 2,500 participants in the Framingham Heart Study, a long-running group of generally healthy individuals.

The thymus of each participant was evaluated by measuring its size, structure and composition, creating a “thymic health” score.

Researchers found those with higher scores had roughly a 50 per cent lower risk of death, a 63 per cent lower risk of dying from heart disease, and a 36 per cent lower risk of developing lung cancer compared to those with lower scores.

These risk reductions held even after accounting for age and other health factors.

When the thymus function declines, researchers suspect the immune system becomes less effective at responding to new threats like cancer. They say chronic inflammation, smoking and higher body weight are linked to poorer thymic health.

The second study corroborates this.

It reviewed CT scans and outcomes from 1,200 patients treated with immunotherapy, a key treatment method for cancer involving the priming of one’s own immune system to fight cancerous cells.

Patients with better thymic health had a 37 per cent lower risk of cancer progression and a 44 per cent lower risk of death, even after adjusting for differences in patients, tumours, and treatments, the study found.

The findings point to a previously under-recognised role for the thymus in determining how patients respond to modern cancer therapies.

More studies are needed to confirm these findings, scientists say, adding that an improved understanding of thymic health can help physicians better assess disease risk and guide treatment decisions.

If I asked you to point to your thymus, would you even know where it is? Until recently, I wouldn’t have either. It’s one of those organs you (maybe) learn about briefly, something about immune function in childhood, and then mentally file away as no longer relevant. After all, the long-standing belief has been that the thymus becomes largely inactive after puberty.But new research1Two large studies just took a closer look at this overlooked organ, not in children, but in thousands of adults. And instead of fading into the background, the thymus may still be shaping how well we age, how resilient our immune system is, and even how we respond to certain cancer treatments. What if one of the most overlooked parts of your body is playing a much bigger role in your long-term health than anyone realized?  

Why your thymus matters

  To understand this research, it helps to start with what the thymus actually does. This small organ, located in the chest, is responsible for training T cells, key players in your immune system that help identify and fight off infections, abnormal cells, and disease. It’s especially active early in life, which is why it’s traditionally been associated with childhood immune development. For a long time, the assumption was that its role faded with age. But instead of relying on that idea, researchers took a more direct approach. They used artificial intelligence to analyze routine CT scans and measure thymus health in adults, looking at its size, structure, and composition to generate a kind of “thymic health score.” And they didn’t just look at a small sample. One study analyzed over 25,000 adults from a national lung screening trial, while another drew from participants in the long-running Framingham Heart Study. The link between thymus health, longevity, & disease risk When researchers compared thymic health scores to long-term outcomes, a pattern started to emerge. Adults with healthier thymuses tended to live longer and had lower risks of major diseases, including cardiovascular conditions and certain cancers. In fact, those with higher thymic health scores showed significantly lower rates of all-cause mortality and disease incidence, even after accounting for factors like age, smoking, and existing health conditions. What stood out most was how variable thymic health was between individuals. Two people of the same age could have very different thymus profiles, suggesting that immune aging doesn’t follow a single, predictable timeline. Instead, it seems to be shaped by a mix of biology, environment, and lifestyle over time. Researchers also found links between poorer thymic health and higher levels of chronic inflammation, smoking, and higher body weight. These same factors that we already associate with long-term health may also be influencing how well this organ continues to function behind the scenes. 

What this means for cancer treatment & immunotherapy

looked, more specifically, at how thymic health might affect response to cancer treatment. Immunotherapy has been one of the biggest breakthroughs in oncology, designed to help the body’s own immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. But one of the biggest challenges is that it doesn’t work equally well for everyone. The researchers wanted to explore whether part of that variability was due to the tumor or if it had more to do with the patient’s immune system. They analyzed CT scans from thousands of cancer patients undergoing immunotherapy and compared thymic health to treatment outcomes. What they found suggests that patients with stronger thymic health tended to have better responses, including lower risk of disease progression and improved survival rates.  

The everyday habits that may shape your thymus

Okay, so how in the world do you improve your thymic health? Chronic inflammation, metabolic health, physical activity, and smoking status all showed associations with how well the thymus was functioning. That suggests this isn’t just a fixed, age-related decline; it may be something that responds to long-term lifestyle patterns. This means focusing on the inputs that directly influence inflammation and metabolic health: Prioritizing strength training and daily movement. Eating in a way that stabilizes blood sugar. Getting consistent sleep timing(not just more sleep) Cutting back on the things that drive inflammation, like excess alcohol or ultra-processed foods. These are the habits that not only improve the health of your thymus but also your overall longevity. 

The takeaway

I’ve never once thought about my thymus in the context of longevity. But this research makes it hard to ignore. It suggests this small, overlooked organ may be silently shaping how we age, how resilient our immune system stays, and how well we handle stressors over time.
