My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

Higher Abdominal Fat Linked to Faster Biological Aging

TOPLINE:

Abdominal adiposity was associated with accelerated biological aging across measures based on metabolomics, clinical biomarkers, and DNA methylation. Accelerated biological age predicted higher risks for cardiovascular (CV) disease, death, and frailty. Metabolic aging explained many of these associations.

METHODOLOGY:

  • Researchers used data from a prospective Chinese cohort to assess whether abdominal adiposity was linked to accelerated biological aging and contributed to CV and general aging.
  • They included adults aged 30-79 who were recruited between 2004 and 2008 and were free of CV disease at baseline. Clinical biomarker, metabolomic, and DNA methylation data were analyzed in 12,369, 4391, and 980 adults, respectively.
  • Three biological age clocks were developed using blood metabolomics (MetaboAge), routine clinical biomarkers and physical measures (Klemera-Doubal method biological age [KDM-BA]), and DNA methylation (DNAm PhenoAge).
  • Researchers examined associations of waist-to-hip ratio and its BMI-adjusted version with accelerated biological aging using both observational models and Mendelian randomization.
  • Mediation analyses quantified the extent to which accelerated biological aging mediated associations between abdominal adiposity and CV aging (atherosclerotic CV disease [ASCVD] incidence and related mortality) and general aging (all-cause mortality and frailty).

TAKEAWAY:

  • Both MetaboAge and KDM-BA predicted all-cause mortality more accurately than chronological age (P < .01 for both). DNAm PhenoAge did not add predictive value.
  • Higher waist‐to‐hip ratio and its BMI‐adjusted version were linked to faster aging across all three clocks in observational analyses (P < .01 for all). Genetic evidence supported a potential causal effect (P < .05 for all).
  • MetaboAge and KDM-BA accelerations were associated with increased risks for ASCVD and related mortality, as well as all-cause mortality. KDM-BA acceleration was also linked to a greater risk for frailty, whereas DNAm PhenoAge was linked only to all‑cause mortality.
  • MetaboAge acceleration mediated about 10.5%-25.3% of the association between waist-to-hip ratio and CV aging, and up to 60.6% of the association with all‑cause mortality.

IN PRACTICE:

“Findings underscore the importance of considering fat distribution in aging research and highlight the potential for metabolically targeted interventions to slow biological aging in individuals with abdominal obesity. Moreover, interventions aimed at modulating aging process itself may help mitigate adverse health consequences associated with abdominal adiposity, offering a complementary strategy to traditional lifestyle or weight management approaches,” the researchers wrote.

LIMITATIONS:

Causal findings were limited to the cohort and required external validation. Residual confounding or reverse causality could not be fully excluded. Sample sizes differed widely across the three measures of biological age.

Regularly Wearing a Cooling Vest Might Help You Lose Body Fat, According to a New Study

Participants who were overweight or living with obesity wore the accessories for two hours every morning for six weeks and lost an average of two pounds. The researchers suspect showering or swimming in frigid water could have similar effects

Ice baths, frigid showers and cold plunges seem to be all over social media, with people claiming that exposure to chilly water has seemingly endless health benefits.

Proposed gains include boosting the immune system, increasing libido, kickstarting the metabolism, improving circulation and even making new friends, said James Mercer, a biologist at the Arctic University of Norway, to Healthline’s Nancy Schimelpfening in 2023.

Growing scientific evidence hints that some of these supposed benefits are real. Now, preliminary research presented in May at the European Congress on Obesity adds to the conversation after finding that consistent cold exposure via cooling vests might help people lose body fat. The results suggest that the accessories could be an easy weight-loss lifestyle strategy that people could incorporate with traditional approaches like exercising and eating healthy.

“This is one of the first studies looking at the impact of cold exposure over a prolonged period of time, involving people with overweight and obesity,” study co-author Mariëtte Boon, an obesity physician at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, said at the conference, reports the Guardian’s Anna Bawden.

The study involved 47 adults who were overweight or living with obesity in the Netherlands. About half of them wore a cooling vest and waist wrap for two hours every morning for six weeks. The cold-exposure participants shed an average of 2 pounds over the experiment period, while those in the control group gained an average of 1.3 pounds, the researchers found.

How does this happen? Study co-author Helen Budge, a biologist at the University of Nottingham School of Medicine in England, explained that “daily cold exposure activates brown fat, which uses body fat stores to produce heat,” per the Guardian.

“It is possible that wearing a cooling vest trains brown fat to be more active and has a healthy effect on lipids, glucose and inflammation in the body. All those things are preventative in cardiovascular disease,” she added.

Analysis revealed that much of the weight loss in the cold-exposure group compared with the control group did come from a reduction in body fat, and lean mass—made of components like muscle and bone—remained relatively unchanged. That’s important because dropping pounds often comes with muscle loss.

Cold vests are probably a more practical at-home approach than having to find a corner for a bathtub full of ice water. Budge said that the clothing is not uncomfortable, and that people in the construction industry already make use of them to keep cool, reports the London Times’ Eleanor Hayward.

Cooling Vest May Reduce Body Fat in Obesity

TOPLINE:

Daily cold exposure using cooling vests for 2 hours each morning over 6 weeks reduced body weight and body fat mass in adults with overweight or obesity. The intervention improved thermal comfort and cold-induced carbohydrate oxidation while reducing cold perception over time.

METHODOLOGY:

  • Cold exposure has gained attention as a possible way to decrease fat accumulation; however, previous studies involved lean participants or short-term interventions.
  • Researchers studied the effects of longer-term cold exposure in 47 adults with overweight or obesity (BMI, 25-35) who were randomly assigned either to the control group (n = 23) or the cold exposure group (n = 24). Participants wore a cooling vest and waist wrap with phase change material with 15 °C cooling pads for 2 hours each morning for 6 weeks.
  • Body composition was measured using bioimpedance and hepatic steatosis via FibroScan, and resting energy expenditure was evaluated at thermoneutrality (27 °C) and upon acute cold exposure (11 °C) before and after the intervention period.
  • Daily questionnaires assessed participants’ cold perception and thermal comfort.
  • Other measures included serum levels of glucose metabolism markers (eg, glucose and insulin) and lipid metabolism markers (eg, triglycerides, free fatty acids, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), and whole blood was assessed for leukocyte count and lipopolysaccharide-induced cytokine release.

TAKEAWAY:

  • Compared with the control group, the cold exposure group had a reduced body weight by 1.6 ± 0.4 kg (P < .001) and BMI by 0.5 ± 0.1 (P < .001), attributed to a reduction in body fat mass of 1.5 ± 0.5 kg (P = .007), whereas fat-free mass remained unchanged.
  • Repeated cold exposure improved thermal comfort ratings of the cooling vest (P = .020) and decreased cold perception (P = .025).
  • Acute cold exposure enhanced cold-induced carbohydrate oxidation by 0.005 ± 0.002 g/min (P = .019).
  • Cold exposure did not result in changes in hepatic steatosis, circulating levels of markers related to glucose or lipid metabolism, leukocyte composition, or lipopolysaccharide-induced cytokine release in blood. 

IN PRACTICE:

“In subjects with overweight or obesity, 6 weeks of daily cold exposure reduced body weight primarily by lowering body fat mass,” the authors of the study wrote.
