My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

 In this ever-changing modern world, people should be highly adaptable and have the ability to adjust to any situation. We aim to do extensive research on the relationships that exist between yoga, neuroplasticity, and artificial intelligence (AI), and also the methods for developing a high level of cognitive resilience. In order to identify pathways to cognitive wellbeing, we examine the cultural foundations of yoga, the transformative potential of AI, and neuroplasticity in this paper. To get the most useful understanding of how to promote cognitive resilience, people must be able to recognise the intersection and synergy between these components. Only then will they be able to learn how to promote cognitive resilience when confronted with life's challenges, as well as how to think differently going forward by applying these useful strategies.

Well, this poses a challenge for yogis!

Yoga has a lot of flex appeal — it can increase strength, improve posture and lower the odds of developing chronic diseases.

But a triple-board-certified neurologist warns that some yoga poses can raise the risk of strokea medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted.

“Ironically, certain types of yoga can be helpful in aiding motor recovery following stroke,” Dr. Jeremy M. Liff, a senior member of the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine and Northwell Lenox Hill, told The Post.

“However, other yoga poses can potentially cause strokes by injuring the arteries that run from the neck to the brain.”

A cervical arterial dissection is a tear in the wall of a neck artery. A stroke occurs when blood enters the damaged wall and forms a clot that travels to the brain.

Cervical arterial dissection is responsible for 1% to 2% of all strokes and up to 25% of strokes in young and middle-aged people, clinicians noted in a 2022 case report about a 63-year-old man who suffered arterial dissection after a yoga session.

People have experienced spontaneous carotid artery dissection — a type of cervical artery dissection — for a variety of reasons, “from hyperextension of the neck during yoga or alcohol consumption to violent coughing and vomiting or chiropractic manipulation,” researchers wrote in April in the Annals of Vascular Surgery.

Yoga poses that involve extreme neck extension or place weight and pressure on the head can be hazardous, particularly for those who are older or who suffer from cervical spine disease, Liff said.

Here’s a look at three yoga moves that have been linked to strokes.

‘Wheel’ pose

A 1973 case report — one of the first to document the potential for a stroke following yoga — revealed that a 28-year-old woman suffered a narrowing of her left vertebral artery and a stroke after doing the “wheel” pose.

The deep backbend, also known as upward bow or Urdhva Dhanurasana, is supposed to open the chest, shoulders and hips while strengthening the arms, legs, spine and core muscles.

‘Fish’ pose

The “fish” pose, also called Matsyasana, is a reclining back-bending move.

Physical therapist Susan Eaton said she ran into trouble doing an advanced version of the pose that added more weight to her head and neck.

“It’s a hyperextended neck pose that as a physical therapist I later questioned,” Eaton told NBC News at the time. “I had done this pose before, but this time I was uneasy, as though I knew I might be pushing myself to the edge.”


She suffered a stroke four days later, having torn her left carotid artery.

Hollowback handstand

Yoga influencer Rebecca Leigh said she was practicing the “pretty intense” handstand when her vision became blurry.

“This pose requires you to extend your neck, drop your hips back and arch your lower spine all while upside down in a handstand,” she explained.

She visited the emergency room two days later, when her right eye drooped and her pupils appeared to be two different sizes.

She had torn her right carotid artery.

“The doctor on staff said, ‘Well, you, my dear, had a stroke,’ ” Leigh said.

“We spent the next two days in the neurological intensive care unit while they tried to figure out why a healthy, happy, active, non-smoking, healthy eating, lifelong athlete of 39 years had just had a stroke.”

Yoga may improve cognitive function in older adults at risk for decline

Yoga may prevent inflammation and cognitive decline in those at risk, according to a poster presentation at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference.

“Brief mind-body practices can be a useful adjunct preventive strategy that can reduce stress, improve sleep, reduce inflammation and provide neuroplastic effects on the brain with improved structural and functional connectivity and improved cognitive performance, especially in those who are interested in integrative medicine approaches,” study author Helen Lavretsky, MD, MS, a professor in the department of psychiatry at UCLA, told Healio.

“Yoga could be a useful adjunct strategy for prevention of cognitive decline with possible anti-inflammatory effects and direct neuroplastic effects on the brain.” Helen Lavretsky, MD, MS

In a randomized controlled trial of 79 patients, Lavretsky and colleagues assessed the efficacy of Kundalini yoga vs. memory enhancement training on mood and cognitive function in women with a mean age of 66.5 years.

The group that participated in yoga demonstrated improvements in seriousness of forgetting at both 12 weeks and 24 weeks. Participating in yoga prevented decrement in gray matter volumes compared with memory training. Furthermore, the researchers found that right hippocampal volume increased after participating in yoga. Compared with the yoga group, the memory enhancement training group had higher levels of inflammation.

“Yoga could be a useful adjunct strategy for prevention of cognitive decline with possible anti-inflammatory effects and direct neuroplastic effects on the brain that result in improved subjective cognitive impairment,” Lavretsky said.

Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease that can interfere with speech. It can also cause memory problems, or affect the way your arms and legs move. According to Harvard Health Publishing, stroke also can lead to difficulty with balance, which means that there is an increase in the risk of falling down. Read on to find out how yoga can help in stroke recovery.

Here’s what a stroke patient (stroke symptoms and treatment) can do to rehabilitate.

1. Breathe properly

Breathing in through the nose and breathing out slowly through the mouth is the way to do it. This way large volumes of air can ease out. This will help to improve your vital capacity of oxygen in your lungs and saturation of oxygens immediately.

2. Sit quietly and do nothing

Just resting and shutting your eyes brings order in place and gets you back in rhythm flow and gets you synchronised, says Mehta.

3. Eat well

Resorting to sweets like honey, raisins, dates, figs, jaggery (ways to eat jaggery) and chocolates usually help in elevating mood and conditioning your heart better, making it pump better.

Yoga for stroke recovery

Yoga is more about our body and mind connection, which is why it can greatly help in stroke recovery (health benefits of yoga). So, coming to yoga asanas that can help to improve and recover from stroke. Here are some of the asanas that Mehta recommends.

1. Ustrasana

• Sit in kneel down position then inhale.
• Slowly bring your hands down towards your heels or simply keep your hands behind your back.
• Exhale, bring your head down and then relax.

2. Setu Bandhasana

• Lie down on your back and fold your legs at shoulder level distance.
• Inhale and lift your chest and back up then exhale and slowly come down.

3. Bhujangasana

• Lie down on your stomach and keep your hands next to your chest.
• Inhale, arch your back, straighten your hands, with your shoulders back and hold. Exhale then come back.

4. Paschimottanasana

• Sit with your legs straight.
• Inhale and stretch your hands up and then exhale and bend forward.

5. Seated Parvatasana

• Sit in a comfortable position or Padmasana.
• Inhale and lift your hands up in the namaste position then exhale and relax.

Also, heavy foods and exercises are a complete no. So, avoid foods that have a lot of carbohydrates. Take a break from running, cycling and jumping if you did all this before the stroke. Do not engage in high intensity sports activities. In fact, even in yoga, low intensity asanas are what you should stick to if you just had a stroke. Stretching your body just to ease out is also something that you can try.
