The Future Vision Behind the New Stroke Guidelines
The 2026 Guideline for Adult Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery, published in Stroke by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, represents the first update to the guidance in a decade. Beyond its formal recommendations, the writing group behind the guideline also weighed in on where they hope stroke rehabilitation practice will move in the years ahead, from where patients receive care(NOT RECOVERY!) to how clinicians define a successful recovery.
Lorie Richards, PhD, associate professor of occupational and recreational therapies and adjunct associate professor of physical therapy and athletic training at the University of Utah, who chaired the guideline writing group, shares her hopes for how stroke rehabilitation could evolve in the coming years. Richards touches on where patients should be receiving care(NOT RECOVERY!), what outcomes beyond basic self-care deserve more attention, and who else in a patient's life stands to benefit from additional support.
