My blog is not to help survivors recover, it is to have the 10 million yearly stroke survivors light fires underneath their doctors, stroke hospitals and stroke researchers to get stroke solved. 100% recovery. The stroke medical world is completely failing at that goal, they don't even have it as a goal. Shortly after getting out of the hospital and getting NO information on the process or protocols of stroke rehabilitation and recovery I started searching on the internet and found that no other survivor received useful information. This is an attempt to cover all stroke rehabilitation information that should be readily available to survivors so they can talk with informed knowledge to their medical staff. It lays out what needs to be done to get stroke survivors closer to 100% recovery. It's quite disgusting that this information is not available from every stroke association and doctors group.

The Breathing Technique That Helps Fight Major Depression

Breathing technique can reduce the stress hormones in the central nervous system.
Controlled yogic breathing helps alleviate severe depression, new research finds.
People in the study had depression that had not responded to antidepressant medication.
Dr Anup Sharma, the lead author of this study, said:
“With such a large portion of patients who do not fully respond to antidepressants, it’s important we find new avenues that work best for each person to beat their depression.
Here, we have a promising, lower-cost therapy that could potentially serve as an effective, non-drug approach for patients battling this disease.”
The study compared the effects of learning the breathing technique over two months with a control group.
The results showed that those in the yoga group had lower depression and anxiety.
The control group showed no improvement.

Yoga breathing technique

The breathing technique was practised in groups and at home.
The technique involves a series of rhythmic breathing exercises designed to put people in a calm and meditative state.
Slow and calm breaths are alternated with fast and stimulating breaths.
The video below gives you an idea of what is involved in “Sudarshan Kriya yoga”, the breathing technique used in the study.
Along with learning this breathing technique, people practised yoga postures, sitting meditation and received stress education.
Dr Sharma said:
“Sudarshan Kriya yoga gives people an active method to experience a deep meditative state that’s easy to learn and incorporate in diverse settings.”
Sudarshan Kriya yoga has already been linked to benefits in milder forms of depression.
These studies suggest that yoga reduces levels of stress hormones in the central nervous system.
Dr Sharma said:
“The next step in this research is to conduct a larger study evaluating how this intervention impacts brain structure and function in patients who have major depression.”
The study was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry (Sharma et al., 2106).

Your doctor has a lot of work cut out for them to ameliorate these effects because you won't be exercising at all post stroke. 3 years post stroke my heart rate at age 53 was 54, cardiovascular fitness of an athlete. Today on my vacations I can and have walked up to 17 miles.

There comes a point in almost every fitness lover's life when they consider throwing in the towel after a workout—both figuratively and literally. Blame it on your looming work deadlines, or the stubborn needle on the scale, or even just plain old boredom.
That’s normal. But here’s why you shouldn’t follow through on the temptation to just quit: There are plenty of benefits to exercise, but they’re not permanent. In fact, many of those hard-earned gains will start to disappear in as little as two weeks, says Farah Hameed, MD, a sports medicine physician with ColumbiaDoctors.
Here’s exactly what you can expect to happen to your body if you give up exercise:

Within 10 days: Your brain might start to change

For years, researchers have suspected that exercise is good for your brain, too—according to one 2013 review, it might be able to help offset age-related memory loss. Now, a new study in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience found that even a short vacation from your workout might cause changes to the brain.
In the study, when a group of long-term endurance runners took a 10-day exercise hiatus, their subsequent MRIs showed a reduction in blood flow to the hippocampus, the part of the brain that’s associated with memory and emotion. The researchers point out that although the runners didn’t experience any cognitive changes over the period, more long-term studies are needed.

Within two weeks: Your endurance will plummet and your vitals may spike

After just 14 days, you might have a harder time climbing a flight of stairs or keeping up with your colleagues during the monthly kickball game. The reason you’re so winded? Skipping sweat sessions causes a drop in your VO2 max, or the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use. It can dip by about 10% after two weeks, says Dr. Hameed. It only gets worse from there: After four weeks, your VO2 max can drop by about 15%, and after three months, it can fall about 20%—“and those are conservative estimates,” Dr. Hameed notes.
Staying even slightly active can help: One 2009 study found that male kayakers who took a five-week break from their training saw an 11.3% drop on average in their VO2 max, while those who worked in a handful of exercise sessions during each week only saw a 5.6% drop.

Is your doctor even measuring your VO2 max? 
You do want your brain to get the maximum amount of oxygen possible to help you recover.  But I bet your doctor is doing nothing about it.  I guess you will just need to breathe on your own. Hopefully your doctor does have a prescription for you to breathe. Actually s/he should.

Even if you don’t notice a change in your speed or strength, you might experience a sharp rise in your blood pressure and blood glucose levels—something that could be more serious for people with diabetes or high blood pressure, says Dr. Hameed.
Researchers from South Africa found that a two-week exercise break was enough to offset the blood pressure benefits of two weeks of high-intensity interval training; another 2015 study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that people who did an eight-month bout of resistance and aerobic exercise saw an improvement in the blood glucose levels, but lost almost half of these benefits after 14 days of inactivity.

Within four weeks: Your strength will start slipping

Dr. Hameed estimates that some people will notice their strength declining after about two weeks of inactivity, while others will begin to see a difference after about four weeks. The silver lining: Our strength probably diminishes at a slower rate than our endurance, and one 2011 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning found that when one group of men stopped doing resistance training, they still had some of their strength gains up to 24 weeks later.

Within eight weeks: You might gain fat

Dr. Hameed estimates that people will start to notice a physical change—either by looking in the mirror, or at the number on the scale—after about six weeks. Even elite athletes aren’t immune to the rebound. A 2012 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that competitive swimmers who took a five-week break from their training experienced a 12% increase in their levels of body fat, and saw a boost in their body weight and waist circumference. (We should also point out that these athletes weren’t totally sedentary—they still did some light and moderate exercise.) And a 2016 study found that elite Taekwondo athletes who took an eight-week hiatus from exercise experienced an increase in their levels of body fat and a decrease in muscle mass, too.

That said, there’s a difference between breaking up with exercise for good and taking a well-intentioned rest. The distinction: “You need to do some type of activity [every day],” says Dr. Hameed. For example, maybe you just ran the Chicago Marathon and can’t run another 16 miles, let alone 26—in that case, says Dr. Hameed, you should do some cross-training. (Think: cycling, using the elliptical, or even light walking.) Just don't quit moving altogether—your body, brain, and waistline will thank you.

The practice of yoga incorporates many separate breathing techniques (above and beyond the coordinated breathing you do during yoga routines) that can help relax you and release tension. And many of these techniques can be done anytime, anywhere — not just during yoga class.
If you'd like to reap the benefits of these breathing techniques, start with the abdominal breathing technique described below. Once you've mastered abdominal breathing, you can then try others based on the unique benefits that each technique offers.

Abdominal breathing

As we go about our daily lives, most of us take quick, shallow "chest breaths" that can leave us feeling tense and drained. Abdominal breathing, also called "belly breathing," is a basic yoga breath that combats the effects of chest breathing. The technique emphasizes breathing deeply to create abdominal movement. It's essential for those beginning a yoga practice, but everyone can benefit from learning it, yogi or not.
Abdominal breathing is best learned while lying on your back, with one or both of your hands on your abdomen. To take an abdominal breath, inhale slowly and deeply, drawing air into the lowest part of your lungs so your hand rises. Your belly should expand and rise as you inhale, then contract and lower as you exhale. One way to think of this is to imagine your lungs as two glasses of water — with each breath, you should fill them from the bottom up, but empty them from the top down.
Once you're comfortable doing abdominal breathing in a reclining position, you can try it while sitting or standing. You can use this technique as you practice a yoga posture or while meditating. It is also useful at any time of the day when you need to calm down.

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) is a messenger molecule involved in numerous physical and pathological processes in biological systems. Therefore, the development of a highly sensitive material able to detect NO in vivo is a key step in treating cardiovascular and a number of types of cancer-related diseases, as well as neurological dysfunction. Here we describe the development of a fluorescent probe using microbeads to enhance the fluorescence signal. Microbeads are infused with the fluorophore, dansyl-piperazine (Ds-pip), and quenched when the fluorophore is coordinated with a rhodium (Rh)-complex, ie, Rh2(AcO-)4(Ds-pip). In contrast, they are able to fluoresce when the transition-metal complex is replaced by NO. To confirm the “on/off” mechanism for detecting NO, we investigated the structural molecular properties using the Fritz Haber Institute ab initio molecular simulations (FHI-AIMS) package. According to the binding energy calculation, NO molecules bind more strongly and rapidly with the Rh-core of the Rh-complex than with Ds-pip. This suggests that NO can bond strongly with the Rh-core and replace Ds-pip, even though Ds-pip is already near the Rh-core. However, the recovery process takes longer than the quenching process because the recovery process needs to overcome the energy barrier for formation of the transition state complex, ie, NO-(AcO-)4-(Ds-pip). Further, we confirm that the Rh-complex with the Ds-pip structure has too small an energy gap to give off visible light from the highest unoccupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level.

Or maybe you just want to do Breath of Fire Kundalini breathing to get your nitric oxide. Your doctor will know absolutely nothing about either one so why the hell are you paying them?


Research Focuses on Beet Juice After Stroke

Research often works with one scientist building off anothers work.

It has been with a groundbreaking 2003 study about how the chemical nitrite is converted into nitric oxide in the human body to regulate blood flow and blood pressure. The study was conducted by Wake Forest University physics professor Daniel Kim-Shapiro, PhD, director of the Translational Science Center, in collaboration with lead investigator Mark Gladwin, MD, chief of the division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine and director of the Vascular Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

In time, the work of Gladwin and Kim-Shapiro gave Cheryl Bushnell, MD, director of Wake Forest Baptist Health's Comprehensive Stroke Center, an idea.

Benefits of High Nitrate Diet

The work of Gladwin and Kim-Shapiro, as well as others, grew after 2003; for example, studies showed that nitric oxide derived from nitrite could improve outcomes in heart attack and pulmonary hypertension.

Bushnell was particularly interested in a 2010 follow-up study by Kim-Shapiro's multidisciplinary team from Wake Forest University and a Wake Forest School of Medicine team that included Jonathan Burdette (Radiology) and Gary Miller (Health and Exercise Science). That study showed that a high nitrate diet resulted in increased blood flow in parts of the brain for healthy elderly people.
Some study participants had been given beet juice, a high nitrate product that is converted in the mouth to nitrite and eventually to nitric oxide in places in the body where it is needed. The nitric oxide is a vasodilator, meaning it expands blood vessels, and largely targets areas in the body that are low in oxygen.

"We showed that there's increased cerebral blood flow in areas associated with cognitive decline in older adults after they drank beet juice,'' Kim-Shapiro says.
Building off that idea, Bushnell is leading a new clinical trial that offers stroke patients the potential benefits of beet juice in their recovery.
After a stroke, which kills brain cells, a certain amount of new cells form in the brain. Bushnell says she is hopeful that drinking beet juice will "actually enhance patients' recovery'' because of the way nitric oxide promotes cell growth.

Beet juice taking off? 

In recent years, beet juice has gained traction for its restorative qualities. Scientists around the world have been studying the efficacy of beet juice in everything from reducing blood pressure levels to improving athletic performance. At the Summer Olympics last year in London, numerous athletes were seen drinking beet juice to promote increased blood flow.
Kim-Shapiro says beet juice seems to increase respiratory efficiency at the cellular level, which could increase exercise efficiency. Studies are ongoing.
The clinical trial for stroke that Bushnell is leading will involve 80 patients and should be completed in two years. After that, Bushnell says, the goal would be to pursue a multi-center trial.
Bushnell says she has not lacked for interest in people willing to try a small portion of beet juice daily for 30 days after suffering a stroke.
"So far, people want to do something that would potentially help them recover,'' she says. "The enthusiasm is there.''

Marketing Beet Juice 

Although it could be years before beet juice is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a product to enhance recovery from the effects of stroke, Wake Forest University has worked with a company in Florida to make bottled beet juice.
The drink has been in the works for more than three years thanks to the efforts of Wake Forest Innovations, the division that helps to commercialize and market the work of scientists and researchers. Bottles of the sweet-tasting juice, a formula developed to counter the natural bitterness of beet juice, are already available for use by Kim-Shapiro's research team. The juice is expected to be available to consumers this year.
Kim-Shapiro says people essentially see beet juice as a new type of energy drink.
Last year, he says, he gave some beet juice samples to his students in advance of exams to gauge their reaction and see if it would give them an energy boost.
They were so enthusiastic, he says, that some would come up to him and ask, "Can I have another bottle? I have another final."
