If your hospital needs a stroke support group, IT MEANS THEY ARE AN ABSOLUTE FUCKING FAILURE AT GETTING SURVIVORS RECOVERED!
New Stroke Support Group Launching in Jarrow
Different Strokes is pleased to announce the launch of a new Stroke Survivor Support Group in Jarrow, providing a welcoming space for working-age and younger stroke survivors to connect with others who understand life after stroke. The Jarrow Stroke Support Group will be run by volunteers Karen and Mark, and will meet on the third Saturday of each month, starting on Saturday 21 February 2026, from 10.00 to 11.30. The group will offer a relaxed and supportive environment where stroke survivors can meet others, share experiences, and feel less alone. Family members and carers are also welcome to attend. Venue:
Bilton Hall Community Centre, Taunton Avenue, Jarrow, NE32 3RT
When:
Third Saturday of the month, 10.00 – 11.30
First meeting: Saturday 21 February 2026
Why this group matters: Karlyn’s story The Jarrow group is being set up with the support of Karen and Mark’s daughter, Karlyn, who survived an ischaemic stroke at the age of 37. Before her stroke in July 2020, Karlyn was fit and active, taking part in events such as the London Marathon and Great North Run. Her stroke came without warning and left her with aphasia, paralysis on one side, and a long, difficult recovery. Like many younger stroke survivors, Karlyn found that support after leaving hospital was limited, and she often felt unsure about what help was available. Through finding Different Strokes, Karlyn discovered that recovery does not follow a fixed timeline and that peer support can make a real difference. Access to information, private physiotherapy, and the Different Strokes community helped her regain confidence and return to work. Now, Karlyn and her family hope the Jarrow group will offer others what she wished she had earlier in her recovery — a place to meet people who understand, share experiences, and support one another. “I hope being able to meet other stroke survivors will be a positive and life-enhancing experience. We are called stroke survivors for a reason.”
